What if nature could provide one-third of the solutions needed to meet global climate goals?🌿

Thomas Crowther, Founder of Restor, explores how biodiversity shapes everything from carbon capture to food security — and how every species depends on a wider web of life to thrive.

Maintaining diverse, interconnected ecosystems is essential for climate stability, economic resilience, and regeneration.🌍

This idea sits at the heart of Tom’s upcoming book, Nature’s Echo, which offers a scientific basis for environmental optimism — showing how regeneration is not only possible, but already unfolding through the natural systems around us.

At a time of growing eco-anxiety, his work invites us to move from fear to agency, and to see optimism not as blind hope, but as a force for change.

Congratulations to the latest cohort from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on completing the Villars Institute's certified Systems Leadership Program for Executives. 👏

With a vision to make lives easier, safer, and better, ISO plays a vital role in bringing people together to develop International Standards that address global challenges, advance innovation, support sustainable growth, and help build a more resilient future. 🌿

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected and complex, systems leadership is more important than ever. Throughout the program, participants explored how systems thinking can help leaders navigate complexity, align diverse stakeholders, and turn adaptive challenges into opportunities for meaningful impact.

We are inspired to see these capabilities being strengthened within an organization that helps shape the frameworks and partnerships needed to address some of the world's most pressing challenges. We look forward to seeing how this cohort applies these insights in support of ISO's mission and the future it is helping to build. 🤝

Art and science can bring complex research to life in ways that resonate far beyond academic spaces🌿

In just two days, we’re joining .le.rosey for .rosey 2026, where Thijs Biersteker will lead a Villars Institute session on How Art and Science Give Research Reach in Classrooms.

Through the Foundation, Thijs transforms environmental research into immersive, data-driven experiences that bring science into cultural, educational, and global forums.🌍

At EduFest, he will explore how art, science communication, and education can help high-school students engage with ecological challenges.

He will also premiere the Invasive Species Education Module, developed with the Villars Institute and Fauna & Flora, which combines data collection, visualization, and action to help students understand invasive species and respond in their own communities.

Climate change and biodiversity loss are not separate crises — they are deeply connected.🤝

Alexa Firmenich, founder and director of Naia Trust and strategic advisor to SEED at the Crowther Lab, reminds us that understanding the relationship between climate and nature is essential if we want solutions that truly work.🙌

That means moving beyond the misconception that humans are separate from nature, and embracing a more holistic approach — one that brings together science, investment, journalism, advocacy, and community action.

By bridging disciplines and working collectively, we can foster the collaboration and innovation needed to protect biodiversity, strengthen ecosystems, and build climate resilience.🌿

Protecting nature is not just about conservation. It is about restoring our connection to the living systems we depend on.

How do you design clean energy solutions that actually work in local contexts? 📍
It starts with people—not technology.

The Villars Academy Himalayas experience, in partnership with GHE, explores this firsthand.

Working alongside local communities, participants contribute to solutions like solar microgrids and clean cooking technologies—reducing reliance on firewood, improving air quality, and expanding access to energy. ⚡

But what makes these solutions work goes beyond the technology. It’s about understanding the wider system—how energy connects to health, livelihoods, environment, and culture—and building trust so communities can shape their own solutions.

Commercial vehicles account for a relatively small share of vehicles on the road, yet contribute disproportionately to emissions.

Jakson Alvarez, Co-Founder of Evolectric, focuses on addressing this gap by converting older commercial vehicles into electric models — extending their lifespan while reducing emissions.🚘

By working with local garages and integrating data-driven platforms, this approach lowers barriers to adoption and supports a more accessible transition to electric mobility.

The result is a model that reduces emissions, lowers operating costs, and makes better use of existing assets within urban transport systems.🙌

The world does not need more passive learners.
It needs young people ready to lead change.

🏔️ Villars Academy: Himalayas — Ladahk, India

An exclusive experiential learning journey for students and educators who want to move beyond the classroom and into real-world impact.

Delivered in partnership with GHE and led by CEO Jaideep Bansal, this journey places participants inside complex, real challenges — working alongside Himalayan communities on energy access, livelihoods, and climate resilience.

Participants will:
✅Contribute to tangible solutions, including solar energy deployment
✅Work directly with communities and practitioners on the ground
✅Build systems leadership skills to understand and shift complex challenges
✅Gain the mindset, confidence, and perspective that only real-world experience can develop

The experience begins online with the Systems Leadership Program and culminates in a 7-day Himalayan expedition.

🌍 This is the first in a series of Villars Academies — experiential journeys designed to equip the next generation with the skills, mindset, and experience to navigate complex global challenges.

For students aged 18 and over, educators and school cohorts ready to take action.

What does it take for technology to restore nature with communities, not just for them?🤝

The Ripple Effect continues — where young leaders from the Villars Youth Council sit down with entrepreneurs, experts, and changemakers to unpack the systems shaping our future, explore how ideas turn into action — and how small steps can create powerful ripple effects.

🎙️Episode 2: Restoring Nature: Drones, Communities & Co-Learning | Jane Glavan

Technology can be a powerful tool for environmental restoration, but only when it is built with people, not just for them. In this episode, we speak with Jane Glavan, co-founder of Distant Imagery, about using drones, data, and community collaboration to restore mangroves and support climate resilience across the Global South.

Together, we explore what it means to simplify innovation, listen deeply, and create solutions that empower communities to lead their own change.🌍

How close are we to destabilizing the systems that keep Earth livable?🌍

For thousands of years, our planet has provided a stable foundation for human civilization. Today, that stability is under increasing pressure.

The planetary boundaries framework helps explain why—identifying the critical thresholds that maintain the balance of Earth’s systems. Crossing them increases the risk of large-scale and potentially irreversible change.

In this Villars Distinguished Lecture, Johan Rockström, Director of the and one of the framework’s leading architects, outlines where we stand today, why it matters, and how close we may be to key tipping points.

For those looking to build a deeper understanding of the Earth system and the climate challenge, this offers a strong, science-based foundation.💭
