IEF - International Environment Forum

IEF - International Environment Forum The IEF is a Bahá'í-inspired organization addressing the environment and sustainable development.

The challenges of the global environment and of achieving sustainable development have become major preoccupations around the world. While scientific knowledge is helping to define solutions, implementation is hindered by a lack of motivation and commitment, suggesting that the problems are as much social, cultural and spiritual as they are technical or scientific. Since environmental problems and

development aspirations are both global and diverse in scope, so too must solutions be sought through exploration of the many approaches and rich experience of different communities, peoples, cultures and faiths. The International Environment Forum (IEF) is a Bahá'í-inspired non-governmental professional organization whose members from the Bahá'í Faith and the wider community promote the application of spiritual and ethical principles to the challenges of the environment and sustainable development.

As humanity faces unprecedented global challenges ranging from catastrophic climate change to growing extremes of wealth and poverty, it is increasingly clear that our current trajectory is unsustainable. This course is designed to explore the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability from both scientific and ethical/spiritual perspectives inspired by Bahá'í principles.

Over the course of six weeks, we will study, explore and discuss the following topics:
* Unit 1: Introduction to the Concept of Sustainability
* Unit 2: The Environmental Challenge and Bahá'í Approaches
* Unit 3: Economic Development and Sustainability: Poverty and Wealth
* Unit 4: Social Development: Crises and Solutions
* Unit 5: Future Perspectives on Human Prosperity
* Unit 6: Education for Sustainability: Individual and Community Action

The course is designed with flexibility in mind, requiring a few hours of study weekly for each unit. It utilizes a mix of readings and videos to illustrate the latest thinking on sustainability. The course involves individual study, online discussion forums and weekly discussions on Zoom.

Interested in social, environmental or economic development? Then this article is a must-read!

Last year was one for challenging long-held assumptions—a healthy practice, especially given the shifting sands of the world around us. For my part, I have been reflecting on a three-month sabbatical I was able to take in rural western Kenya. One thing I noticed was that development efforts in tha...

The thirtieth Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, 10-22 November 2025, clearly illustrates the present paralysis that we face between two extremes: protecting business-as-usual for those with wealth and power, or making a rapid transformation in governance to correspond to this new global reality that we are one human family.

Bring ethical perspectives to COP30 !
You are invited to participate in a dialogue that will contribute to the Climate COP30 taking place in Brazil this November.
Join the dialogue via Zoom on Sunday, September 28, 2025! (See time and Zoom registration below)
We will discuss questions about climate action asked by the Brazilian government. Afterward, we will send the collected ideas and suggestions to the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES) Circle which is gathering the key points of these dialogues taking place all over the world and will present them to the national leaders at COP30.
"The Global Ethical Stocktake Circle and the Presidency of COP30 invite religious communities, artists, Indigenous peoples and local communities, youth, scientists, businesspeople, women, activists, and policymakers from the six continental regions of the planet to reflect on the values, behaviors, and responsibilities that must be transformed so that the commitments made at the UN Climate Conferences become a reality."
We will discuss the following questions prepared by the GES:
- Why do we so often deny or ignore what science and traditional knowledge say about the climate crisis and share or tolerate misinformation, even knowing lives are at risk?
- Why do we continue with production and consumption models that harm the most vulnerable and are not aligned with the 1.5ºC Mission?
- What can we do to ensure that rich countries, major producers, and consumers of fossil fuels accelerate their transitions and contribute financing for these measures in the most vulnerable countries?
- What traditions, histories, or practices (cultural, spiritual) from your community teach us to live in greater harmony with nature?
- Considering that we need to guarantee diversity in the collective, how can we mobilize more people, leaders, corporations, companies, and nations to support just and ethical changes in combating the climate crisis? What ideas and values could inspire us in this mission?
We hope that you will join our conversation on
