Mama Tierra

Mama Tierra Empowering indigenous women, promoting their art, advancing education and protecting the environment!

🌸Japan-inspired landscapes in Switzerland?
Yes — and almost nobody talks about this park hidden near Zurich.

Park Seleger Moor was the life’s work of Swiss gardener and visionary Robert Seleger and his wife Karina Seleger, who played a central role in many of his projects and in the cultural life of the park itself.
What exists there today did not appear by chance.

In 1953, Robert Seleger discovered the unique soil conditions of the Rifferswil moor while searching for trees for a garden exhibition in Zurich. Fascinated by the landscape, he began planting rhododendrons and azaleas there. After a devastating winter destroyed many of the plants, he started travelling across North America, Russia, China, Nepal and Japan in search of more resistant species that could survive Swiss winters. Over decades, he crossbred and cultivated countless varieties himself.

Little by little, former peat pits became ponds filled with water lilies. Forest paths, bridges, fern gardens and rare trees transformed the land into one of the most extraordinary botanical parks in Switzerland.

The influence of Japan can still be felt throughout the park, especially in the tea house Robert Seleger created after his travels. Together, Robert and Karina also organised concerts and cultural gatherings there, imagining the park not only as a garden, but as a place of contemplation, beauty and culture.

This beautiful park is a reminder that beauty does not simply happen. Someone plants it. Protects it. Waits for it to grow.

If you are in Switzerland, we truly recommend visiting this extraordinary place. Walk slowly. Sit quietly. Listen to the birds. Allow yourself time to rest among so much beauty.

How much can you fit on one motorbike? 🏍️
In Alta Guajira, a motorbike is rarely just a motorbike.
It carries water across dry and difficult terrain.
It carries yarn so artisans can continue working from home.
It helps transport and distribute food supplies to families across distant communities.
Sometimes, it even carries grief — transporting a sarcophagus across the desert so a loved one can be laid to rest.
Through sand, heat, mud and treacherous paths, motorbikes are part of daily survival in the Wayuu territory. They connect distant communities where roads are often barely roads at all.
But these difficult roads also constantly damage the vehicles. Repairs are frequent and costly, which is why Mama Tierra also supports artisans and their families with motorbike repairs whenever possible. Without transportation, many daily activities simply become impossible.
Our social projects — including food distribution, emergency support and transportation assistance — depend on donors like yourself to continue without interruption.
What may seem ordinary in one part of the world becomes essential in another.
Mobility, access and distance are experienced very differently depending on where you live — and that resilience often travels on two wheels.
Please consider making a donation today.

Does this happen to you too?
It’s a holiday here in Zürich.
But not for the Wayuu.
And honestly… maybe not really for many of us either.
With globalization, messages keep coming, orders keep moving, work keeps flowing across time zones. It has become surprisingly hard to truly stop.
Does this happen to you too?
What do you do to guarantee yourself real rest and a well-deserved time off? 🤍
