Franklin Switzerland is a US- and Swiss-accredited nonprofit university based in Lugano, CH.

Franklin Switzerland is located on a hillside above Lugano, the principal city of Switzerland’s southernmost Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. An American liberal arts institution in an international environment, Franklin is fully accredited in the United States by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and in Switzerland by the Swiss University Conference. Franklin places extraordinary emphasis on cross-cultural perspectives, an emphasis designed to affect the direction and meaning of a student’s college experience, life and career. A commitment to courses of study that are international in perspective and cross-cultural in content has been the cornerstone of our educational mission since our founding in 1969. In fact, we classify this need as the international imperative in education. Franklin Switzerland awards the Bachelor of Arts degree in a number of academic areas, each enhanced by the opportunities afforded by our European location, as well as the exemplary qualifications of our faculty.

The first photos from our Fall 2026 Academic Travels have arrived, and we're starting in Frankfurt! 🇩🇪📸

Professor David Suleiman brought his *Personal Finance* students to one of Europe's leading financial centers, where they explored the institutions and people shaping the world of finance.

Their experience included visits to the European Central Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange for a lecture on cryptocurrencies, and the Deutsche Bundesbank for an expert lecture. They also explored the city's banking history and put their financial literacy skills to the test at the Money Museum.

❗️At Franklin, Academic Travel is part of the curriculum. Every semester, students take a course that includes travel, giving them the chance to explore their field of study firsthand and see where their education could take them.

From Australia to Franklin's classrooms! 🇦🇺🇨🇭

Our students recently had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Jennifer Long, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia.

Invited by Dr. Heidi Toivonen, Nora McNeely Hurley Assistant Professor of Psychology, Dr. Long joined two of Heidi's classes for guest lectures exploring clinical research and mental health.

In Research Methods in Social Sciences, students learned about designing and conducting clinical trials in emerging fields. In Positive Psychology and Health, the conversation focused on depression, emotional flexibility, and alternative therapeutic approaches.

What made these sessions particularly engaging was Dr. Long's ability to bring together scientific research, clinical experience, literature, and philosophy.

Where are our students this October? A little bit of everywhere! 🌍

It's Academic Travel season, which means that for the next two weeks, our students and professors are heading out into the world to learn together.

Picture studying history while walking through ancient cities, exploring finance in Europe's financial centers, or discovering different cultures and environments firsthand.

🤝 These aren't just trips. They're part of the Franklin education!

Every semester, students spend 8–10 days traveling as part of their coursework, earning academic credit while experiencing the subjects they're studying in a completely different way.

That's two Academic Travel experiences every year, from destinations such as Iceland and Italy to Japan, Costa Rica, and beyond.

📚 We were delighted to welcome Dr. Giorgio Ennas and Dr. Ariane Mottale for a conversation about Dr. Ennas's book, Italo-Ottoman Relations in the Age of the Congress of Paris: Mirroring the ‘Other’, 1856–1871.

The discussion took us back to a fascinating chapter of 19th-century history, exploring how Italian and Ottoman diplomacy developed alongside one another, and how ideas about cultural identity and international relations were shaped along the way.

🌍 What made the conversation particularly interesting was how closely these historical questions connect to debates we're still having today.

At Franklin Switzerland, studying Health Sciences means exploring the connections between biology, chemistry, psychology, public health, and environmental science, with an interdisciplinary approach that brings together scientific knowledge and the human side of health.

And there's much more to the experience than lectures and labs! With small classes, close interaction with professors, Academic Travel, and opportunities to study abroad at our partner universities, students can explore science from different perspectives, both in Switzerland and beyond 🌍

Figuring out what comes next is part of the college experience. And at Franklin, students don’t have to figure it out alone ❤️

Through our Pathway Program, led by Justine Salam, Associate Dean for Career Readiness, we help students explore their strengths, interests, and motivations, and understand how these can shape their academic and professional futures.

Recently, students took part in a skills self-assessment that encouraged them to reflect on what they do well, what they enjoy, and what matters to them.

🎯 It’s one of the ways Franklin brings career preparation into the student experience, combining the transferable skills of a liberal arts education with the personal guidance students need to find their own path.

It took five mines for Dr. Waldo Perez to make a dollar, and that might be the most interesting part of his story.

👉️ Over nearly three decades, Dr. Perez has explored more than 100 mineral prospects, helped uncover some of the world’s largest lithium deposits, and served as President and CEO of Neo Lithium, Lithium Americas, and Latin American Minerals.

At our latest Meet the Manager, he shared what happened behind those achievements, and why his most important lesson for creating value is persistence: “One hundred times may not be enough.”

Last Wednesday brought a little friendly competition to the Tone Athletic Center ⚽️

Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors took to the field for a charity soccer tournament, while students gathered on the sidelines to cheer on their classmates, enjoy the music, and support the Boki Mamiko bake sale.

Boki Mamiko has been part of the Franklin community for years, creating opportunities for students to come together while giving back and supporting charitable causes.

Moments like these are also part of what makes the experience of studying at an American university in Switzerland and living on a residential campus so unique: the community extends well beyond the classroom.

Thank you to everyone who played, cheered, organized, baked, and helped make the afternoon happen! 🤍

More than 700 students from Franklin Switzerland, USI and SUPSI gathered at East Campus for YOUniversity, Beyond Studies Party.

Between DJ sets, student associations and activities, the evening gave Lugano’s university communities the chance to meet, connect and begin the new academic year together.

This edition also introduced the first YOUniversity Games, a team tournament built around collaboration, strategy and team spirit. Congratulations to the Franklin Warriors, who brought home the trophy! 🏆
