Geometric Solids – The Foundation of Geometry
“The natural and happy way for children to learn is by touching and moving solid objects, not by trying to memorise rules.”
— Maria Montessori
In the Montessori Children's House, geometry begins with the hands. Through exploration of the Geometric Solids, children develop an understanding of shape, dimension, language, and spatial relationships long before they encounter abstract definitions.
By touching, carrying, comparing, and naming the solids, children build a strong foundation for future mathematical thinking.
🌱 From the concrete to the abstract.
👐 Learning through movement and experience.

🌍✨ The Second Plane of Development (6–12 years)

According to Grazzini, children in the second plane of development are no longer primarily explorers of the physical world. Instead, they become explorers of the world of ideas.

The elementary child develops a powerful imagination and a growing capacity for reasoning. Questions such as “Why?”, “How?”, and “What if?” become central to their learning. They seek to understand the relationships between things, the origins of the universe, the story of humanity, and their place within it.

Grazzini emphasized that the task of education during this period is not merely to provide information, but to ignite the child's imagination and inspire independent research. The child wants to go beyond what is immediately visible and discover the wider world through exploration, collaboration, and intellectual adventure.

“The elementary child is a reasoning mind.” – Montessori
