In Vohimana, Iaroka and Maromizaha, teams from the Chameleon Centre Conservation are carrying out an extensive survey programme to gain a better understanding of the diversity, distribution and ecology of the chameleons inhabiting the rainforests of eastern Madagascar.

Day and night surveys, GPS data, photographs, and studies of habitats and environmental conditions: every observation helps to improve our knowledge and guide future conservation efforts.

This new video takes you right into the field, alongside the CCC teams, student researchers, site managers and local communities committed to protecting this exceptional biodiversity.

🇹🇿 Exciting news for Tanzania's wildlife! 🦎
We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Kinyonga Programme, a new partnership between the Women in Conservation Organization (WICO) and Caméléon Center Conservation (CCC) dedicated to conserving Tanzania's incredible chameleon diversity.
Did you know that Tanzania is home to 47 recorded species of chameleons?
Many of these unique species occur nowhere else in the world, making Tanzania one of the most important countries globally for chameleon conservation.

The Kinyonga Programme will combine:
🔬 Scientific research
🌿 Conservation action
🎓 Capacity building for young Tanzanian conservationists
📚 Environmental education and awareness

Our first activities will focus on the Eastern Arc Mountains, where many of Tanzania's most threatened chameleon species live.
This partnership brings together international scientific expertise and local leadership to help ensure that these remarkable species are protected for future generations.
We are excited to begin this journey and look forward to sharing our research, field expeditions and conservation achievements with you.

Après une première année de suivi réussie dans la réserve de Vohimana, notre programme de recherche est désormais déployé sur deux forêts de l’est de Madagascar. Deux équipes locales assurent un suivi scientifique permanent des deux sous-espèces de Calumma parsonii.

🇬🇧 Our Parson’s Chameleon programme has reached a new milestone!

A new video is now live on our YouTube channel!

Following a successful first year of monitoring in the Vohimana Reserve, our research programme is now being rolled out across two forests in eastern Madagascar. Two local teams are carrying out ongoing scientific monitoring of the two subspecies of Calumma parsonii.

This 2026 mission marks a significant step forward:
🌿 Start of monitoring of Calumma parsonii cristifer in Iaroka.
📡 Replacement of transmitters on individuals that have been monitored for over a year in Vohimana, with veterinary checks confirming the absence of any complications related to our protocol.
📊 Over 19,000 ecological, spatial and behavioural data points will be collected by the end of the year.
🎓 Training of six Madagascan Master’s students and the creation of jobs for guides and local communities.

A new article examines the occipital-lobed chameleons (Calumma cucullatum group) of Madagascar. The authors find that the phenetic group is not monophyletic, with the C. furcifer group being sister to C. cucullatum, and the C. malthe group sister to a clade containing the C. nasutum group and the C. brevicorne group (containing all other species of the phenetic C. cucullatum group). Their analysis suggests that some taxa within this lineage show signs of ancestral introgressive hybridization, however most currently recognized species are supported as deep monophyletic lineages. The authors, however, split C. malthe, describing the northern populations as Calumma krystalae in honor of Krystal Tolley. Finally, the authors find that current interpretations of the C. brevicorne / C. crypticum complex based on morphological and geographic identifications do not match clustering and lineage delimitation analyses within the C. brevicorne complex. Interestingly, museomics analysis of type specimens placed the types for C. brevicorne within a grouping containing specimens from Ranomafana (which have tended to be interpreted as C. crypticum), while specimens from the type locality of C. crypticum and from Andasibe (which have tended to be interpreted as C. brevicorne) fall within a grouping containing the type of C. gularis, a species that had previously been synonymized with C. brevicorne. While this data suggests that this two species classification may not correctly reflect the genetic and morphological diversity of the C. brevicorne complex, the authors conclude that not enough data is available at present to fully test and further clarify their status and refrain from making any related taxonomic decisions until future in-depth study can resolve their taxonomy.

𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀 (𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮)

Rhampholeon temporalis war bisher nur von den East Usambara Mountains und dem Magrotto Hill im Osten Tansanias bekannt. Auf einer Forschungsreise nach Tansania haben deutsche Wissenschaftler die Art rund 40 km entfernt gefunden: Während einer Nachtexkursion in den West Usambara Bergen entdeckten sie vier Individuen der Art nahe eines kleinen Baches in Mitten eines Regenwaldfragments. Der Fundort liegt rund 240 m höher als die bisher bekannten Höhenlagen, auf denen Rhampholeon temporalis vorkommt.

In anderen Regenwaldfragmenten in der näheren Umgebung konnten sie die Art jedoch nicht entdecken. Das scheint die Annahme zu bestätigen, dass Rhampholeon temporalis ein größeres Verbreitungsgebiet als gedacht hat. Genetische Untersuchungen sollten jedoch zunächst klären, ob es sich bei den gefundenen Tieren tatsächlich um Rhampholeon temporalis und nicht eine nah verwandte, noch unbeschriebene Art oder das ähnlich aussehende Rhampholeon viridis handelt.

Caméléon Center Conservation (CCC) est fier d’annoncer le lancement officiel du Kinyonga Programme, un nouveau programme régional développé en partenariat avec la Women in Conservation Organization - WICO en Tanzanie.

Avec 47 espèces recensées, la Tanzanie abrite la plus grande diversité de caméléons d’Afrique. La première phase du programme se concentrera sur les Eastern Arc Mountains, une région qui rassemble l’ensemble des espèces de caméléons actuellement menacées du pays et constitue l’une des plus importantes priorités de conservation en Afrique de l’Est.

Le Kinyonga Programme repose sur une approche intégrée articulée autour de quatre axes :
🔬 Recherche scientifique
🌿 Conservation
🎓 Formation et renforcement des capacités locales
📚 Sensibilisation et partage des connaissances

Développé par CCC avec WICO, le programme associe expertise scientifique internationale et forte implantation locale. Caméléon Centre Conservation (CCC) is proud to announce the official launch of the Kinyonga Programme, a new regional programme developed in partnership with the Women in Conservation Organisation (WICO) in Tanzania.

With 47 recorded species, Tanzania is home to the greatest diversity of chameleons in Africa. The first phase of the programme will focus on the Eastern Arc Mountains, a region that is home to all of the country’s currently threatened chameleon species and represents one of the most important conservation priorities in East Africa.

The Kinyonga Programme is based on an integrated approach centred around four key areas:
🔬 Scientific research
🌿 Conservation
🎓 Training and local capacity-building
📚 Awareness-raising and knowledge-sharing

Developed by CCC in partnership with WICO, the programme combines international scientific expertise with a strong local presence. It also contributes to the skills development of young Tanzanian professionals, particularly women, and addresses the research and conservation priorities identified by the IUCN for several of the species concerned.

💡The term ‘Kinyonga’ means ‘chameleon’ in Swahili, and reflects the programme’s commitment to building conservation efforts based on collaboration with Tanzanian stakeholders.
