XHUMA XHUMA is a social project aimed at fostering the financial literacy of underprivileged pupils in South Africa and empowering them for a better future.

XHUMA is a social project aimed at improving the lives of underprivileged children in South Africa by teaching them financial literacy. As such, XHUMA is set up and executed by Strategy and International Management (SIM) Master students from the University of St. Gallen as part of the SIMagination Challenge course and has been running since 2012. This year, we – an international group of 10 young

people – got together and made a plan on how to improve these children’s lives. XHUMA focuses on South Africa because of the potential for a positive change within its society and our ability as Master level students in a management course to contribute to that change. South Africa is regarded as Africa’s most developed economy, as a BRICS nation, and also as one of the rising nations in our global economy. However, besides South Africa still being plagued by its past of colonialism and Apartheid with 10% of its population owning more than 85% of household wealth, the country‘s inequality issues were further exposed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A major driver of these unfortunate circumstances is the high youth unemployment rate which is currently exceeding 50%. A key issue in this self-reinforcing vicious poverty cycle is financial literacy. We, as students in the SIM program, with diverse backgrounds and a common passion to change the world for the better, have the will to meaningfully contribute to the effort of tackling this issue.

We have an exciting update to share 🎉:

In August, the mentees of Ceres Secondary School had the possibility to visit the factory of Veldskoen Shoes in Cape Town. Veldskoen produces leather shoes (out of upcycled material) as they are iconic South African 🇿🇦 shoes. To make them look more attractive, brightly coloured soles and laces are added - Veldskoen‘s trademark look today. The South African athletes wore these „Vellies“ at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 🇯🇵 in 2021.

Afterwards, the trip for the mentees was not yet over. They got a private tour through the University of Cape Town 🎓 by their mentors from UCT Investment Society.

This trip was a lot of fun as you can see on the photos! 🎉

We are now at the end of our second semester and slowly also the XHUMA journey of the SIM18 group comes to an end 😢

Let´s look back at the past year: We, a group of 10 SIM students, started this journey highly motivated in October 2021 and then further developed the Money Game 💸 and introduced the mentoring program 👯‍♀️. The highlight for sure was our on-site experience at Ceres Secondary School in South Africa 🇿🇦 in April 2022. We were able to conduct the Money Game in person and connect the learners of Ceres Secondary School with UCT InvestSoc for the mentoring program.

Overall, it was an exciting year and a great experience we would not like to miss! We hope that the learners of Ceres Secondary School can really profit from XHUMA.

Now, it is time to handover this amazing project to the SIM19 group which will start next semester. Stay tuned! 🎉

Ceres is very well known for its exportations of fruit and fruit juices, especially pears and apples 🍎 🍐

A large part of the city’s population works at farms that grow the fruit or in factories that pack or produce juice with it. During the time we were in Ceres, we had the opportunity to visit Bella Frutta, a local fruit packaging factory and Ceres Fruit Juices, a fruit juice factory🧃

We also got to know the manager of the juice factory who is the business leader at Ceres Secondary School. This means that he supports the school relating to any projects or help they need.

We learned a lot about the industry and had a great time visiting these local businesses!

Now we are already back in Switzerland for 2-3 weeks and still think about the amazing time we had at Ceres Secondary School! We hope that the learners enjoyed the Money Game and that the ones who are participating in the mentoring program with UCT Investment Society can really benefit from it.

We wanted to say thank you again to Ceres Secondary School and Partners for Possibility to welcome us so warmly and supporting us throughout our whole stay!

On Monday, we finally had the official kickoff event of the mentoring program. 🎉

For the beginning, 20 learners from grade 11 at Ceres Secondary School participate. Each learner gets a student mentor from UCT Investment Society allocated who can support in their future planning and in showing opportunities beyond high school.

The learners are really excited about the program and will develop a lot of plans for their studies and future.
We are very happy to see that!

Last week we finally played the Money game with the learners! We focused on the 9th grade and its 400 students.

For each of the 8 classes we held two sessions, in which they first worked individually and then in teams. We were very happy to see the evolution from one session to another, as the learners realized the importance of investing and had better results.

We really enjoyed the days we spent at the school. The community was truly welcoming and the learners were very excited to play the game with us.

Today we are happy to present you Ceres Secondary School – the school we are focusing on with our XHUMA project this year.

Ceres Secondary School is a 3-hours drive away from the city center of Cape Town. Located in the Ceres Valley which is known for farming (especially fruits), Ceres Secondary School is with 1,800 pupils the biggest out of 4 high schools in the whole valley. The high school focuses on the grades 8 to 12.

The farming in this rural area is very season-dependent and often only brings low income. This is why we are convinced that Ceres Secondary School is the right place for our project. Through teaching financial literacy, we aim to help to break the vicious cycle of poverty and through the mentoring program, to close the gap between high school and university.

This Tuesday some of our members attended the ECOnnect Get-Together.

ECOnnect is the community platform for student associations promoting responsibility and the UN Sustainability Goals (SDGs) at the University of St.Gallen.

We had the chance to introduce our initiative to all the participants and aftwerwards we connected with other sustainable HSG associations.

In our last post we introduced the mentoring program we are working on as part of our project.

Today, we would like you to meet the UCT Investment Society. Members of this society at the University of Cape Town (UCT) will be buddies for the Ceres Secondary School pupils in our program.

The UCT InvestSoc aims to help students to bridge the gap between university and working world.

Through our buddy program we are convinced that not only the gap to the working world, but also the one before from high school to university can be closed.

We are really looking forward to working together with the UCT InvestSoc.
