Trying to make sense of what really happened at MC14? 🤔🌍

Right after the WTO Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé, the Geneva Trade Platform pulled together key reactions and expert insights that help cut through the noise around one of the most debated trade meetings in recent years.

Because the story isn’t as simple as success or failure.

Yes, negotiations stalled. Divisions deepened. And big decisions on WTO reform and digital trade remained unresolved. ⚖️

But at the same time, important signals of cooperation emerged.

Through Trade and Environmental Sustainability Structured Discussions, a coalition of ministers reaffirmed their commitment to using trade as a tool for climate action and sustainable development. This signals that progress is still being built, even when consensus is hard. 🌱

GTP’s curation brings all of this together in one place, to aid you in seeing the bigger picture.

It’s been a big and volatile week in global trade.

Governments are stepping in, tightening controls, and preparing for a world where trade is increasingly shaped by politics and security concerns.

Here’s a quick breakdown from this week’s This Week in Trade:

- China has introduced a new system to review risks to its supply chains—signed by Premier Li Qiang. This could mean new restrictions or countermeasures against countries seen as acting unfairly.

- The UK is considering new powers to push back against economic pressure from other countries—and is asking businesses for input until 18 June.

- The US introduces a new toolkit to check supplier compliance with forced labour, and importers can soon apply for IEEPA tariff refunds (starting 20 April), though the process may take time.

🌍 And globally, the system itself is under strain. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has raised doubts about the role of the World Trade Organization moving forward.

📅 The next WTO meeting in early May could be an important moment.

👉 Bottom line: Supply chains are becoming more exposed to political risk. Is your business prepared?

🎧 Episode 3 - This Week in Trade - Our weekly 5 minute summary of the biggest stories in trade by George Riddell of Goyder Ltd

Whilst MC14 may have ended in deadlock, that's not the whole story.

The outcomes of MC14 exposed just how hard consensus has become.

Major divides between the United States, India, Brazil, and China stalled progress - particularly on digital trade.

At the center:
→ A clash over the e-commerce moratorium
→ Disagreements on special treatment for developing countries
→ A broader question: who sets the rules of global trade today?

But here’s the shift 👇🏼

66 World Trade Organization members didn’t wait. They moved ahead - without the WTO.

Frustrated by the gridlock, they’re pushing forward an e-commerce agreement outside the formal WTO framework for now.

This episode also covers the following:

➡️ Countries advanced work on climate, environment, and fossil fuel reform
➡️ The EU and Australia struck a major trade deal shaped by geopolitics
➡️ The US ramped up trade measures tied to national security and labour rights

⭐ What does it all mean?
Even when global systems stall, trade doesn’t stop -it adapts and realigns.

🎯 Tune in to Episode 3 for a clear, concise round-up of what’s really happening in global trade right now and check out George's LinkedIn account for detailed updates.
