In two days of aerial monitoring, our crew on Albatross UNO was able to spot 5 distressed boats: 4 of them were rescued by Sea-Watch 5 and by the fast asset Aurora which also stablised one more boat in distress until the arrival of the Italian Coast guard, which eventually rescued the people.

However on Sunday, our crew spotted a small wooden boat carrying approximately 30 people. After immediately alerting the competent authorities and relevant actors, and staying on scene for hours, we had to leave area because of fuel restrictions. Until now, we have no information on whether a rescue operation was launched or whether the people on board were brought to a place of safety.

🚨These last three days, has documented a growing presence of Libyan maritime assets in international waters, including patrol boats, fast RHIBs and unidentified vessels repeatedly spotted near boats in distress and SAR vessels such as and .

Libyan patrol boat 101 intercepted a boat in distress, its second documented interception in one week.

aircraft were present during interceptions documented by AlbatrossUNO.

Meanwhile, shipwrecks continue, lives are being lost, and these assets are not being used to save people in distress.

Yesterday, our plane Albatross UNO assisted the sailing vessel AMA in locating, escorting AND finally rescuing 27 people in distress, including 4 children AND 12 women. They’re now safely in Lampedusa.

Following the first rescue, our plane spotted another rubber boat in distress near the Bouri Oil Platform. The information was shared with all assets in the area, including MSF’s boat Oyvon: 27 more people were finally rescued.

Last Wednesday: a violent interception. Since then: 20 bodies.

Last Wednesday (12.08.2026), we, the crew of Albatross witnessed EU-funded Libyan militias violently intercepting people seeking safety - an attack that showed blatant disregard for human life. They carried out the attack from a vessel provided to them by the EU.
On Friday (14.08.2026), we spotted 11 bodies adrift in the Mediterranean. Since then spotted another 3 bodies, and on Monday (17.08.26) we spotted 6 more bodies. At least 20 lives brutally cut short.  At least 20 hopes for a better future extinguished. At least 20 deaths that could have been prevented.

But these deaths aren’t inevitable. They are the consequence of a system that forces people onto increasingly dangerous routes while Europe outsources both its border control and its responsibility.

And these are only the deaths that we see. Far too many remain unseen, leaving families and friends forever without answers about the fate of their loved ones.

Today, we mourn the 20 people who lost their lives in the Mediterranean, and all the others, whose deaths remain unseen. We stand in solidarity with all those seeking safety and freedom.

Europe’s border policies are costing countless lives. We condemn the EU’s harmful partnerships with actors responsible for human rights violations, and we demand an end to the policies that continue to turn the Mediterranean into a graveyard.

11 lives lost.

Today, during a monitoring flight over the Central Mediterranean, the crew of , the joint aerial monitoring aircraft operated by SOS MEDITERRANEE and HPI, witnessed a devastating scene.

From the air, the crew spotted the bodies of 11 people floating at sea. The remains appeared to be in an advanced state of decomposition, highlighting the human cost of the ongoing tragedy in the .

As the aircraft descended to gather more information, the crew was able to make out further details. Some of the bodies were still clothed. Others were being kept afloat by tire inner tubes.

Later today, on Sea-Watch 5 identified the 11 bodies which were floating in the sea.

At the same time, we witness a surge in Libyan assets, endangering the lives of people in distress onboard unseaworthy boats, and bringing people back to a cycle of abuse in .

Within only one hour, the crew onboard our monitoring aircraft witnessed two interceptions.

While SOS Humanity rescue ship was nearby and ready to provide assistance, Libyan Coast Guard illegally ordered them to head north.

Join us on a day in our Aerial Surveillance Project on the Central Mediterranean. Part 3: Post flight ✈️

Our aerial reconnaissance mission does not end once the plane has landed. After every flight comes another important phase involving debriefing, documentation, reporting, technical checks, follow-up communication, processing the media, handling data, conducting operational analysis and preparing for the next mission.

Much of our work takes place quietly after landing. Every mission generates information, decisions, documentation and lessons that help to shape the next operational day.

This is what the post-flight phase can look like for us.

Unsere Luftaufklärungsmission endet nicht mit der Landung des Flugzeugs. Nach jedem Flug folgt eine weitere wichtige Phase, die Nachbesprechungen, Dokumentation, Berichterstattung, technische Überprüfungen, Folgekommunikation, die Aufbereitung der Medien, die Datenverarbeitung, die Durchführung operativer Analysen und die Vorbereitung auf den nächsten Einsatz umfasst.

Ein Grossteil unserer Arbeit findet hinter den Kulissen nach der Landung statt. Jeder Einsatz liefert Informationen, Entscheidungen, Unterlagen und Erkenntnisse, die den nächsten Einsatztag mitbestimmen.

So kann die Phase nach dem Flug bei uns aussehen.

Join us on a day in our Aerial Surveillance Project on the Central Mediterranean, Part 2✈️

Once we are airborne, the mission requires constant focus, communication and coordination.
The Central Mediterranean is vast. We may spend hours flying search patterns over the open sea, scanning for vessels, monitoring situations, relaying information and documenting observations while constantly adapting to changing operational conditions.

An essential part of our work is documenting human rights violations committed by state actors and Libyan Militias.

Meanwhile, our ground crew are continuously involved: they maintain communication with coordination centres, rescue assets, partner organisations and media teams, ensuring that information flows safely and reliably.

Begleitenuns durch einen Tag in unserem Luftüberwachungsprojekt im zentralen Mittelmeer, Teil 2.✈️

Sobald wir in der Luft sind, erfordert der Einsatz ständige Konzentration, Kommunikation und Koordination.
Das zentrale Mittelmeer ist riesig. Wir verbringen oft Stunden damit, Suchmuster über dem offenen Meer zu fliegen, nach Schiffen Ausschau zu halten, die Lage zu beobachten, Informationen weiterzugeben und Beobachtungen zu dokumentieren, während wir uns ständig an die sich ändernden Einsatzbedingungen anpassen.

Ein wesentlicher Teil unserer Arbeit besteht darin, Menschenrechtsverletzungen zu dokumentieren, die von staatlichen Akteuren und libyschen Milizen begangen werden.

Währenddessen ist unsere Ground Crew ununterbrochen im Einsatz: Es hält die Kommunikation mit Koordinationszentren, Rettungskräften, Partnerorganisationen und Medienteams aufrecht und sorgt dafür, dass der Informationsfluss sicher und zuverlässig funktioniert.
