The passing of Ralf Lopian, Chair of the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) Steering Committee, is a profound loss for the global agricultural community and the seed sector.

“Ralf’s leadership, rooted in a spirit of inclusiveness and openness, was unique and will be remembered. His soft way of leading brought together a diversity of partners, including the private sector, and enabled us to collaborate closely to build greater engagement around plant health, which starts with seed health.” — Michael Keller, ISF Secretary General

In this excerpt from an ISF Seed Talk (2021), Ralf reflects on what he hoped the International Year of Plant Health would leave behind: not an ending, but “only a beginning”. We will remember Ralf for his dedication to plant health and for the importance he placed on keeping this conversation going.

Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones.
