Today, exactly 25 years ago, ADES began working to reduce pressure on Madagascar’s highly threatened forests.

In the face of ongoing deforestation in one of the world’s richest and most endangered biodiversity hotspots, the organisation has focused on practical solutions: locally produced improved cookstoves that allow many communities to use significantly less fuelwood and charcoal.

At the same time, ADES eto Madagasikara runs environmental education programmes and supports reforestation efforts.

To date, more than 100,000 students have been reached through environmental education, and over 1.5 million trees have been planted.

ADES warmly thanks all supporters, members, donors, partners and the dedicated teams in Madagascar and Switzerland who make this long-term commitment possible.

Le cyclone tropical a causé des pertes humaines et d’importants dégâts à Madagascar, notamment sur la côte Est autour de Toamasina (Tamatave), deuxième ville du pays fortement touchée. Il s’agit d’une tragédie de plus dans un contexte déjà difficile pour la Grande Île.

ADES eto Madagasikara est implantée à Toamasina avec un showroom et des équipes locales. Le passage du cyclone a affecté des membres de notre équipe et leurs proches. Ces derniers jours ont été consacrés en priorité à la situation sur le terrain et au soutien des équipes concernées.

Nous souhaitions informer nos partenaires et soutiens ADES en Suisse une fois les premiers éléments clarifiés. Comme le souligne notre Directrice nationale :

« La priorité a été les équipes et leurs familles. Nous avons assuré le soutien nécessaire et pris le temps d’évaluer la situation avant toute décision concernant nos activités. »

ADES exprime son soutien à toutes les personnes touchées. Nous reviendrons avec des informations complémentaires en fonction de l’évolution de la situation.

🔴Le ministère de l’Éducation nationale a procédé, ce vendredi, à la signature de plusieurs conventions de partenariat avec différentes entités.

🔹La première convention, conclue avec le groupe JPAL (Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab), vise à renforcer la coopération autour du projet KILONGA, lancé en 2021 en partenariat avec l’ONG CARE. Axé sur l’éducation des jeunes filles, ce programme œuvre à l’amélioration de l’environnement scolaire, notamment à travers des actions liées à l’hygiène et à l’assainissement, explique-t-on. Les résultats sont jugés encourageants, avec une augmentation de 20 % du taux de réussite des élèves. L'objectif de la mise à l'échelle est que 16 régions puissent bénéficier de ce projet réussi à Amoron'i Mania.

🔹La deuxième convention, signée avec l’ONG ADES, porte sur la promotion des foyers améliorés et le renforcement de l’éducation environnementale, notamment auprès des élèves et des enseignants du primaire, en faveur de la protection de la biodiversité à Madagascar.

🔹Le ministère a également signé une convention avec l’ONG MADE (« Maisons des enfants »), axée sur l’amélioration de la qualité de l’éducation. Cette organisation intervient notamment dans le domaine de la protection des droits de l’enfant.

Madagascar’s rural exodus is reshaping cities like Antananarivo, where deforestation and air pollution are deeply connected.

offers a bridge between social and environmental solutions.

By 2050, nearly 7 out of 10 people will live in a city. The vast majority of this urban growth is happening in the Global South, with Africa home to 17 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing cities.

Many of these cities are grappling with the twin challenges of energy poverty and inequality amid rapidly expanding populations. Clean cooking is a public health, air-quality, and nature solution hiding in plain sight. Household cooking smoke doesn’t stay indoors; it spills into neighborhoods and adds to urban air pollution. Meanwhile, reliance on wood and charcoal degrades vital forest ecosystems in peri-urban and connected rural areas.

City leaders can take action by:
✅ Prioritizing modern cooking energy in city energy and climate action plans
✅ Enabling clean fuel and electricity infrastructure and streamlining permits for fuel distribution
✅ Ensuring safe cylinders and last-mile delivery
✅ Aligning tariffs/subsidies so the clean choice is the affordable choice
✅ Adopting building codes for institutional kitchens in hospitals and schools.

Clean cooking solutions mean healthier homes and breathable cities.
