# Young Women Break Barriers by Embracing Hands-On Construction Skills

Traditional gender roles continue to evolve as more young women confidently step into fields that have historically been dominated by men. At The Nook, female learners in the Orientation Phase recently demonstrated that determination and curiosity know no boundaries by actively participating in practical construction activities during the extension of the Nook Outdoor Workshop.

Rather than observing from the sidelines, the young women took the initiative to engage directly in essential building tasks. They worked together to excavate pillar holes, take accurate measurements, and contribute to the planning and preparation required for the workshop extension. These activities provided valuable practical experience while building confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Their participation reflects a growing shift in attitudes towards careers and technical trades, proving that construction, engineering, and related sectors are open to anyone with the passion and willingness to learn. By challenging outdated stereotypes, these learners are inspiring their peers and demonstrating that women can excel in hands-on professions just as effectively as their male counterparts.

The practical session also highlighted the importance of exposing learners to diverse career pathways from an early stage. Through real-world experience, participants gained a deeper understanding of construction processes while developing skills that could lead to future opportunities in technical and vocational fields.

The Nook remains committed to creating an inclusive learning environment where every learner is encouraged to explore their interests without limitations imposed by gender stereotypes. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by the female learners during the workshop extension stand as a powerful reminder that the future of skilled trades is brighter when everyone has the opportunity to participate.

As these young women continue to break norms and challenge expectations, they are not only building structures—they are building confidence, inspiring others, and laying the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Turning Scrap into Opportunity: Tawanda’s Innovative Fire Cooking Stand

Innovation is not always about expensive materials or advanced machinery. Sometimes, true creativity comes from seeing value where others see waste. This is exactly what Tawanda demonstrated through his outstanding project, where he successfully transformed scrap metal into a practical and durable fire cooking stand for his aunt.

Tawanda’s project stood out as an excellent example of innovation, sustainability, and community support. Using discarded metal pieces that many people would consider useless, he designed and constructed a strong cooking stand capable of supporting heavy pots during outdoor cooking. His work proved that scrap materials can be recycled and repurposed into useful household equipment while reducing environmental waste.

From the beginning of the project, Tawanda showed dedication and creativity throughout the innovation process. He carefully selected suitable scrap metal, cleaned and prepared the materials, measured the required dimensions, and welded the pieces together to create a stable and reliable structure. The final product was both functional and affordable, demonstrating impressive craftsmanship and technical ability.

The fire cooking stand was specifically made to assist his aunt with daily cooking activities. The design allows firewood to burn efficiently beneath the cooking surface while providing strong support for pots and cooking utensils. This practical solution not only improved convenience in the home but also highlighted how locally available resources can be used to solve everyday challenges.

Beyond the finished product itself, Tawanda’s project carries an important message about environmental conservation and self-reliance. By reusing scrap metal, he helped reduce waste pollution and showed that communities can benefit from recycling materials instead of discarding them. His innovation encourages young people to think creatively, develop practical skills, and use available resources to create meaningful solutions.

Teachers, fellow learners, and community members were highly impressed by Tawanda’s commitment and ability to turn a simple idea into a valuable project. His work reflects the growing importance of technical and practical skills in empowering young innovators to contribute positively to their communities.

Tawanda’s achievement serves as an inspiration to other learners, proving that innovation does not depend on having expensive resources, but rather on creativity, determination, and the willingness to solve real-life problems. His fire cooking stand is more than just a metal structure — it is a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and community empowerment.

Matibi Nook Hub successfully hosted its 9th Cycle Exhibition on the 8th of May, and this time around we introduced a different and exciting approach — a walk-in exhibition. The event started on a high note, with members of the community coming through in great numbers from the beginning right up to the end of the day.
The exhibition created a platform full of hope, creativity, and opportunity for the learners. The projects showcased reflected practical solutions to challenges within the community and demonstrated the learners’ growth in innovation, problem-solving, and technical skills. It was encouraging to see visitors showing genuine interest in the projects, with some learners even receiving potential orders and business inquiries from attendees.
What stood out the most was the confidence and professionalism displayed by the learners while presenting their work. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment truly paid off, and the positive feedback from the community was a clear sign of the impact the hub continues to make.
As the Nook Lead, I am incredibly proud and happy with how the learners represented themselves and the Matibi Nook Hub. They truly did justice to the exhibition, and the experience served as a reminder of the potential that young people have when given the right space, support, and opportunity to create and innovate.

Today was a powerful reminder of what community, skills, and collaboration can achieve. 💪🏾

Simbarashe, together with the Matibi Nook learners, spent the day assisting a local community member in welding an ox-drawn cart. This wasn’t just about building a tool — it was about sharing knowledge, empowering young people with practical skills, and directly improving livelihoods.

An ox-drawn cart is more than transport in rural communities — it’s access to markets, water, firewood, and opportunity. By contributing their time and growing technical expertise, these learners are becoming real agents of change.

At Matibi Nook, learning goes beyond the classroom. It’s hands-on, community-driven, and rooted in solving real challenges.

Proud of this team. This is how we build the future — together. 🌱

Three months at the Matibi Nook, and somehow I went from “nervous and unsure” to “weekends feel empty without it.” 😅

Between baking wins (and a few kitchen battles), new friendships, and surviving my first-ever camping trip—complete with mountain climbing and “The Journey of Life”—this place has really changed me.

What started as “let me try baking part-time” has turned into “future bakery owner loading…” 🍰🔥

Grateful for the growth, the lessons, and the people who made it all worthwhile. The journey is just getting started 🚀

Sweet moments at Matibi Nook 🍰✨

Our learners recently put their skills to the test by baking a delicious chocolate cake for a visiting member of the community. From measuring ingredients to the final decoration, this was a true display of creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning.

Moments like these show how practical skills can bring people together while building confidence and talent. We’re proud of our learners for turning learning into something both meaningful and tasty!
