Every debate about European sovereignty ends up at a physical question: who runs the infrastructure that European business depends on, and who decides what moves across it?

At the European Economic Forum, that question is answered from both ends of the same stack.

Aliette Mousnier-Lompré has led Orange Business since 2022, after building and operating enterprise networks across the group for more than fifteen years. She knows what European digital resilience costs to build, and where its real dependencies sit.

'Independence is a capability, not an attitude.'

Kevin Sartori knows what he is talking about. Out of the Pixhawk project at ETH Zurich, he co-founded Auterion in 2017 – today one of the leading companies for autonomous systems, with Rheinmetall among its investors and a contract for 33,000 drone kits for Ukraine.
Sartori built the technology in Zurich. He scaled it in the US.

She has led institutions on both sides of Europe's most-discussed divide – and knows that naming Europe's strengths and naming its blind spots are the same job.

Prof. Dame Sarah Springman became Rector of ETH Zurich in 2015 – only the second woman to hold the post since the university's founding in 1855. Today she is Principal of St Hilda's College at the University of Oxford. Before that, she represented Great Britain as an elite triathlete for nearly a decade and went on to help make triathlon an Olympic sport as Vice-President of the International Triathlon Union. A market in Kyiv is an unusual place for a lesson in European innovation policy, one might think.

Tim Mak reports from Ukraine, where he founded the Counteroffensive. We gave him one minute: what would he tell Europe's policymakers about defence tech – and about innovation more broadly?

Tariffs, supply disruptions, geopolitical tensions. For many SMEs, this is already exhausting daily business. What can SMEs do to deal with the new geopolitical reality?

Together with our Platinum Partner Forvis Mazars in Switzerland, we invited over forty senior executives from French-speaking Switzerland to Lausanne to answer this question.

The underlying dilemma: with trade openness of 150% of GDP, Switzerland is especially exposed – yet too small to set the rules itself. Four levers emerged for SMEs:
✔️ liquidity management rather than margin focus
✔️ robust rather than merely resilient supply chains
✔️ a board that actively engages with geopolitical risk
✔️ and above all: being indispensable. Where a customer cannot easily switch suppliers, they will also absorb a tariff surcharge.

What an insightful journey! Our sold-out Friends Business Trip 2026 took us to Warsaw, a city at the heart of Europe’s economic, technological and geopolitical transformation.

Over three days, we explored Poland from different perspectives. Prof. Rafał Riedel provided insights into the country’s political and social development, Dr Małgorzata Bonikowska examined Poland’s rise as one of Europe’s most dynamic economies, and Tim Mak shared his perspective on the changing security landscape and the role of innovation in strengthening Europe’s resilience.

Our conversations with representatives from business, politics and academia, together with our visit to WB Group, offered first-hand insights into the opportunities and challenges shaping Poland and Europe today.

Just as valuable were the conversations within our group and with local business leaders. They created space to reflect, challenge our perspectives and build meaningful connections across borders.

Can we trust the technology we are building our future on?
