🌍 World Environment Day

Europe is focused on competitiveness, resilience, security. Rightly so.
But Gaya Herrington – VP Sustainability Research at Schneider Electric, Club of Rome member and TED speaker – raises a question that sits beneath all of it: what story are we telling about ourselves?

At EEF25, she argued that the dominant narrative – that we are selfish maximisers – describes us poorly. Social science suggests that when basic needs are met, we are far more altruistic than the homo economicus model assumes. Eager, even, to contribute to the web of life we are part of. She calls it the story of interdependence. A provocation worth sitting with – today, and beyond.

Europe moved fast after 2022. New suppliers, new pipelines, new partnerships. But swapping one dependency for another is not the same as achieving strategic autonomy.

In his contribution, journalist and Lucerne Dialogue fellow Daniel Harper argues that Europe's real opportunity lies elsewhere – in transforming the structure of its energy system. And that the Green Deal, often reduced to an environmental agenda, is the strategic vehicle to do it.

Few diagnoses have landed as bluntly as this one. And Ekholm is not alone – from Nokia to SAP to Siemens, Europe's most senior business leaders are sounding the alarm: the continent's industrial base is under pressure, its innovation gap is widening, and the window for action is narrowing.

The museum, however, is not inevitable.

Across Europe, there are companies, leaders, and institutions that are not waiting for the right framework or the next report. They are executing – in deep tech, in energy transition, in defence, in digital infrastructure as f.e. our partner Orange Business. They are proving that European competitiveness is not a theory. It is a practice.

This is precisely why this year's European Economic Forum is built around the theme "Proof of Concept". We will bring together the high performers to demonstrate what is possible.

Who would you put on the EEF26 stage as Europe's proof of concept?

Last week, Switzerland's startup ecosystem gathered in Bern for the Swiss Startup days – a reminder of what Europe does well, and what remains structurally unresolved.

The bottleneck is not talent and ambition. It is institutional: a gap between strong research and commercial scale, between national capital markets and European growth.

In his opinion piece, our fellow Ricardo Nogueira Martins examines exactly that – and makes a concrete proposal for how Switzerland could help close it.

"I would like to see Europe act more decisively together – even if that means contributing a little more in the short term, and not every euro flows back to one's own country."
That is what Robert Habeck, former Vice-Chancellor and Minister for Economic Affairs of Germany, told us at EEF25.

We asked him where, concretely, he would focus efforts to build a stronger Europe.

It is not the treaties between governments that hold Europe together, but the web of economic and cultural exchange and – most importantly – the shared interests of real people.

It is time to treat European cooperation for what it is: not an ideal, but a strategic necessity. The challenge – and in an era of societal fragmentation, it is a central one – is to ensure that this is understood and owned by Europe's citizens, not just its institutions.

What held true for coal and steel in 1950 holds true today for AI, energy and defence.
The question is not whether Europe can cooperate. The question is whether it can afford not to.

Most organisations treat uncertainty as a problem to be managed. Peter Hinssen thinks that's the wrong instinct entirely.

The entrepreneur, startup investor and lecturer at London Business School has spent over two decades advising some of the world's most complex organisations – among them Google, Microsoft, BMW and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – on how to turn technological disruption into strategic advantage. He has founded and exited technology ventures, served as Entrepreneur in Residence at McKinsey & Company, and authored six bestselling books. His most recent, The Uncertainty Principle (2025), makes the case that volatility is not the enemy of progress – it is its precondition.

At the European Economic Forum 2026, Hinssen will show how organisations can harness the momentum of technological and geopolitical disruption rather than brace against it. A keynote for those who read the cracks in the system as an invitation to act.

"Who are you?" not "What do you do?" – that's the question that comes first at FRIENDS. For Reto Jauch, Head Board & CEO Practice, SZ&J, that distinction makes all the difference.

He joined the FRIENDS Business Club because the big questions won't let him go: How does Switzerland find its place in a Europe that must redefine itself? And how does Europe hold its ground in a world that challenges its values and its capacity to act?

These are not questions you answer alone. At FRIENDS, Reto finds the space to explore them: peer-level exchange in an environment of trust, where diversity is seen as a strategic asset.

Curious to experience FRIENDS for yourself? Our Summer Festival in Lucerne is the perfect opportunity – and you're warmly invited.

The world is reorganising itself. Whatever comes next, it will not look like what came before.

At the European Economic Forum 2025, Vestager offered clarity instead of comfort: Europe has no alternative but to play the strengths it has – a social contract built over generations, and a continent that knows how to work across borders, cultures and interests. When it chooses to.

That last part is the hard part. Trust at scale means committing before you know the outcome, sharing before you see the return.

Where do you see Europe's greatest untapped strength? Let us know in the comments.
