🌍 WFHSS Congress Shortcast Series | Knowledge that connects, evidence that transforms

Microbiological surveillance of flexible reusable endoscopes remains a critical topic for patient safety and quality in reprocessing.

In this WFHSS Congress Shortcast, Annette Rittich from Germany shares key insights from her conference:

“Interfering substances in endoscopic exams and their impact on microbiologic surveillance of flexible, reusable endoscopes.”

Her work highlights an important challenge: substances commonly used during endoscopic procedures may interfere with sampling and culturing results, potentially affecting bioburden recovery rates and the interpretation of microbiological surveillance.

🌍 In sterile processing, more steps do not always mean better results.

Sometimes, true innovation lies in properly validating what we already do.

At the 26th World Sterilization Congress in Hong Kong 🇭🇰, Sulisti Holmes (United Kingdom) delivered a powerful evidence-based presentation:
🎤 “Performance Evaluation of Various Cleaning Methods”

This study compared different cleaning approaches for surgical instruments and delivered an important message for the global CSSD community:
🔬 A properly validated Washer Disinfector (WD) process can achieve cleaning outcomes comparable to more complex or labor-intensive methods.

One of the most relevant findings was that adding additional pre-cleaning stages before the WD did not significantly improve cleaning outcomes in most evaluated scenarios.

💡 What can we learn from this conference?
Validation is more important than assumptions

Evidence must guide practice
More steps do not always mean better outcomes
Efficient, standardized, and validated processes are essential for patient safety

The presentation also highlighted the importance of considering complex instruments, hidden areas, and worst-case scenarios when validating cleaning processes.

Because in reprocessing, excellence is not about doing more…
it is about doing the right thing, based on evidence.

🌍🖐️ May 5 International Day of Hand Hygiene

Hand hygiene remains one of the most important pillars of patient safety and healthcare quality.

In the field of sterilization and medical device reprocessing, its impact goes far beyond a routine practice:
it is an essential component in preserving process integrity, preventing cross-contamination, and protecting patients’ lives.

Every stage of the reprocessing cycle depends on the commitment and excellence of the professionals involved:

✅Cleaning
✅Inspection
✅Preparation and packaging
✅Sterilization
✅Storage and distribution

Every contact matters.
Every decision has an impact.
Every action reflects our commitment to safe, high quality care.

From Central Sterile Services Departments (CSSD) to every clinical area, hand hygiene strengthens infection prevention strategies and reinforces trust in the processes that support modern healthcare systems.

💡 Because sterilization begins long before the sterilizer.

Today, as a global sterilization science community, we reaffirm our commitment to:
🔹 Patient safety
🔹 Excellence in medical device reprocessing
🔹 Prevention of healthcare-associated infections
🔹 Innovation, continuous education, and science-based practice

🩺 Safe hands protect lives.

🌍 Together, we continue advancing sterilization science toward safer, more resilient, and more human-centered healthcare systems worldwide.

🌍 Sustainability is shaping the future of sterilization science

Within the WFHSS Congress Scientific Programme in Hong Kong, a key topic takes center stage:

🎤 Conference 13: “Green Strategies and Possibilities All Over the World”
by Cinthia Vera Fuentes (Chili) 🇨🇱

This presentation also featured in the WFHSS Shortcasts series highlights a critical challenge for our field:
👉 How to effectively integrate sustainability into medical device reprocessing

🔍 Key messages from this conference:
✔️ Reprocessing has a measurable environmental impact across the entire workflow
✔️ Global initiatives are advancing… yet CSSDs remain underrepresented
✔️ Gaps in standardized environmental metrics still persist

💡 The message is clear:
🔸 Sustainability must move from concept to measurable practice
🔸 Integration into quality systems (e.g., ISO 13485) is essential
🔸 Circular economy models and data-driven decisions are the way forward
🔸 Global collaboration is key to progress

🚨 There is a gap… but also a great opportunity.

💬 As sterilization professionals, our role continues to evolve:
Not only ensuring patient safety…
👉 but also actively contributing to the sustainability of healthcare systems
✨ Today, true excellence means protecting not only people… but also the planet.

🌍✨ We have an extraordinary planet.

Diverse. Abundant. Full of opportunities for life and development.

But this abundance is not guaranteed.

Today, more than ever, we must challenge the idea that resources are infinite.
Because every decision we make—even the smallest one—has a real impact on the balance of our world.

🏥 In healthcare, and especially within CSSDs, this responsibility is part of our daily practice.
Every process. Every choice. Every improvement… matters.

♻️ Thinking about the future does not always mean using more resources—
it often means thinking differently.

Because as the circular economy reminds us:
👉 What isn’t measured isn’t managed.
👉 And without management, no real change is possible.

🌱 At WFHSS, we invite you to turn reflection into action.
Not just today—but every day.

Let’s protect the only home we all share.

💙 Because sustainability in healthcare is not an option… it is a responsibility.

🎙️✨ When science challenges the status quo, patient safety moves forward

The WFHSS Shortcast Series continues — amplifying the voices, evidence, and innovations that are transforming sterilization and reprocessing worldwide.

🎧 In Conference 6 – Cleaning and Disinfection, Huifen Zhou (China) shares a powerful study that invites us to rethink how we approach one of the most critical steps in our practice: cleaning.

🔬 Because behind every sterile instrument…
there is a process that must be precise, validated, and constantly evolving.

🧪 This research compares traditional methods with an innovative technology:
the Vacuum Boiling Washer Disinfector (VBWD)

💡 And the message is clear:

* Higher cleaning performance (98.64%)
* Significant reduction in cleaning failures
* Superior effectiveness in complex and lumen instruments
* Strong preference from CSSD professionals

🚀 But beyond the numbers, this study represents something bigger:

A shift toward smarter, more efficient, and evidence-based reprocessing systems —
where innovation is not optional, but essential.

🌍 In a world of increasingly complex medical devices,
our responsibility is not just to follow processes…
but to continuously improve them.

Because every improvement in cleaning…
is a step forward in protecting patients.

🎧 In this episode, Teddy Lee (Hong Kong) presents:
🗣️ “In Control of Wet Pack Through a Scientific Approach.”
Wet packs are not just a technical issue they represent a risk to sterility and patient safety.
In this shortcast, Teddy Lee shares how applying scientific principles of steam behavior, pack configuration, drying optimization, and systematic monitoring can significantly reduce wet pack incidents in Sterile Service Departments.
📉 The study demonstrated a dramatic reduction in wet pack events from 82 cases per year to an average of 5.
✨ A powerful reminder that science, process control, and continuous improvement are essential for safe sterilization.

🎙️✨ Key scientific insights from the WFHSS Hong Kong Congress

The WFHSS Shortcast Series continues, bringing key learnings from the congress directly from the experts who presented them.

🎧 In Conference 3 – Sterilization, Simon Pletzer (Austria) presents an innovative study exploring how steam penetrates long and narrow cavities during steam sterilization cycles, one of the most challenging aspects in the sterilization of complex medical devices.

Using a combination of absorption spectroscopy measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, the research quantifies steam concentration with high temporal resolution inside complex internal channels.

🔬 Key insights from the study:
• Strong agreement between experimental measurements and numerical simulations
• Evidence that cycle modifications can significantly increase steam pe*******on in long cavities
• A practical approach to improving sterilization performance without additional energy or water consumption

These findings provide valuable scientific evidence to better understand steam behavior inside complex device geometries, supporting improved sterility assurance and patient safety.
