The World Olympians Association is saddened by the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, a three-time Olympian and lifelong member of the Olympic community, who died on 28 August 2026, aged 89.

Long before he ascended the Norwegian throne in 1991, King Harald represented his country as an athlete. A passionate and accomplished sailor, he competed at three consecutive Olympic Games: Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972.

At Tokyo 1964, the then Crown Prince Harald carried the Norwegian flag at the Opening Ceremony and, competing in the three-person keelboat event, finished eighth with his crew.

The World Olympians Association extends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the Norwegian Olympic community, Norway’s Olympians and the people of Norway.

The WOA took note of the IOC's notification of termination of the Agreement signed between the WOA and the IOC in September 2025. The WOA accepts that the IOC uses a right both parties of the Agreement have. There is no need to give any reason for termination.

Happy Olympic Day! Once and Olympian Always and Olympian

🏔️ The Pioneer of Cortina: Jakobína Jakobsdóttir

In 1956, one woman changed Icelandic sports forever. Meet Jakobína Jakobsdóttir—the first woman from Iceland to compete in the Winter Olympics. 🇮🇸

At the Cortina d’Ampezzo Games, she stood alone as the only female on her team, taking on the legendary slopes of the Dolomites in Downhill and Slalom.

70 years later, Jakobína has returned to Cortina for the 2026 Winter Games at 93 years old!

This is exactly what the World Olympians Association means by "Once an Olympian, Always an Olympian." Being an Olympian isn’t just a race; it’s a lifelong title.

Proof that the Olympic spirit never melts! ❄️🏀 Even at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, you’ll spot some Summer legends.
We loved catching up with Ilona Burgrová OLY (Czech Republic, London 2012 Basketball). She dropped by to keep the tradition alive—signing the wall, grabbing her OLY pin, and posing with the mascot. Once an Olympian, always an Olympian! ❤️
