The ISA is a grassroots organization dedicated to promoting and developing slacklining worldwide.

The International Slackline Association aims to support and develop the slackline community, protect access, enhance communication and informational resources, and increase the safety of all forms of slacklining worldwide. The ISA is a grassroots effort created by a collection of slackliners from around the world who are passionate about the community, sharing resources, and promoting slacklining in all forms. We are coordinating the translation of slackline materials in about a dozen languages. Additionally, the ISA is coordinating commissions to focus on specific issues important to the slackline community.

Applications to be considered in this G.A. are open until the 22nd of September.

Prior to the G.A. you will have a video call with some of the current board members (and possibly someone from the E.B./A.B.).

If you're unable to attend the G.A., you'll be asked to send a video detailing why you want to join and what you can bring.

The International Slackline Association (ISA) has been informed of a fatal accident in Iran at the end of August.

Shortly after rigging the highline, the highliners rested near the line, without direct sight to the anchor. The only experienced highliner of the group got on the line, without asking for a buddy-check. Soon after, the friends heard a scream. The highliner fell approximately 10 meters to the ground.

Although the friends reached the highliner’s location almost immediately and emergency services arrived within 15 minutes, the highliner did not survive.
The ISA would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim and the slackline community of Iran.
Forgetting to tie into the leash remains the leading cause of death within highlining.

With great sadness, we must inform the community of the death of a highliner in California this past week, on September 4th. The ISA would like to extend our deep condolences to their family and friends. Some words of remembrance from a close friend:

“[He] was a gifted slackliner, actor, and all around stoked individual… He took his Yerba mate everywhere with him, his smile was contagious and he was always positive. He encouraged everyone around him. You could be sure to see him approaching the anchor with a watermelon ready to share it with everyone. He had just won the speed line competition at OMB and was an inspiration to so many of us… He will be remembered and cherished with every step we continue to take in his honor. The community (his second family) won’t be the same without him but he will never be forgotten. He lived life to the fullest, he was chasing his dreams everyday and he would want us to do the same.”

The local slackline community and friends will be holding a memorial this Saturday.

The accident occurred at the anchors of a highline. The highliner dropped a water bottle and reached to grab it when they lost their footing on a progressively sloped ledge, ultimately falling to their death. The highliner was not attached to a safety tether. The ISA Safety Commission would like to emphasize the importance of staying attached while at height and near any cliff edge.

Please extend your support to the SoCal community where possible, and show your respect to the deceased and their family and friends in this trying and difficult time.

ISA Gear Standards & Safety label

The ISA Safety Commission has developed gear standards for slacklining equipment. The standards are minimal requirements and a description of tests the equipment have to pass in order to get the ISA Safety Label. These tests are performed by ISA and gear manufacturer Independent Labs. The Safety Label is then printed on the manual, added to the manufacturer’s website, and to the product itself.

There are currently six ISA Gear Standards:

ISA: 37 Highline Leash
ISA: 41 Highline Webbing
ISA: 51 Webbing Locker
ISA: 52 Connectors
ISA: 53 Slings
ISA: 61 Webbing Grab

🔬Some of the tests that weblocks have to pass are:
Overall quality – edges, pins and markings.
Weblock tie-off method against slippage.
Ability to retain webbing strength.
Break test with a minimum breaking strength (MBS) of 48+ kN .
Currently, there are only five ISA approved weblocks:
Aki Slacklines’ Lynx 5, Balance Community’s Alpine Weblock 5.1, Slack Inov’s Zenlock, SlackX’ Orange, and Slacktivity’s Seahorse.

🤔 Why certified gear?

For consumers, there are legal, ethical, environmental, and of course safety-related reasons for buying and using certified gear. ISA-certified highline gear guarantees that your equipment has been independently tested to survive the real-world forces of highlining. It is also a way to support manufactures who guarantee the safety and quality of their gear. For manufacturers, certifying their gear can help to stand out amongst the competition, gain trust within the community, limit legal liabilities, and gain access to markets requiring certified equipment.

Congratulations to the dozen new ISA Certified Riggers that successfully completed the 3-day Rigger Certification in Belgium last week. The crew consisted of 8 Belgians and 6 internationals, with 2 (new) Belgian instructors and 2 international instructors Roberto De Oliveira. Participants were testing for their knowledge, skills, and attitude in a myriad of ways, including rigging in various scenarios and highline rescues.
