🎒 FOR AFEDO, BACK TO SCHOOL STARTS LONG BEFORE THE SCHOOL BELL RINGS.
When our team met Afedo in Togo, he wasn't carrying a school bag.
He was carrying water.
Afedo lives with his mother and sibling. After losing their father, their mother became the family's sole parent and provider.
She does what she can to keep her children in school, but in a household where every expense matters, education comes with sacrifices.
Afedo helps too.
He fetches and sells water to contribute to the family's daily needs and help his mother meet school-related expenses.
And soon, like millions of children, he will be expected to return to the classroom.
This is why Back to School means something different when you work directly with families and communities.
We see the school bag.
But behind it, there may be a mother trying to find the next school fee.
A child balancing responsibilities with education.
A school trying to provide opportunities with limited resources.
And local partners doing everything possible to keep children learning.
At Lema Plan International, these realities do not disappear when the Back-to-School campaign ends.
Since 2018, we have supported 30+ schools and reached more than 3,000 direct beneficiaries and 7,000 indirect beneficiaries through our work.
And those years have taught us an important lesson:
A project can be completed. The need for education continues.
This is one of the challenges we face today.
Many people generously support a particular LPI project. When that project finishes, the funding often finishes with it.
But our work with schools, children, families and local partners continues.
That is why this Back-to-School season, we are asking for something different.
