In January, Fight for Humanity travelled to Amman, Jordan to engage in 4 workshops as part of our ongoing research with the Beyond Compliance Consortium at the University of York. The three-year project is working to understand how armed actors understand and practice to ultimately reduce civilian harm in war.

Our first workshop centered our ongoing research in . With participants from the Yemen Policy Center and the Yemen Polling Center, we discussed our preliminary findings and next steps in the project. Our second workshop, co-organized with our partner War Child, centered our work in and had a similar focus. Both events sought to better understand our researchers’ and how that may impact our collective findings throughout our work.

In the afternoon, we held a validation workshop to collect feedback from key stakeholders working on Syria, Yemen, and in the broader region. This event was crucial in helping to critically evaluate our current methodology and afforded us an opportunity to compare the Yemeni and Syrian contexts.

Lastly, we participated in a workshop organized by the University of Glasgow and the Center for Civilians in Conflict focused on their BEYOND game, a novel training tool for humanitarian negotiators and others on the .

We’re proud to work with the Beyond Compliance Consortium and its partners to better understand the landscape of armed conflict.

In early February, Fight for Humanity and the Kofi Annan Foundation travelled to Lebanon to visit and support our ongoing project Rooting for the Future, an initiative aimed at restoring parts of Tripoli’s historic Citadel and empowering with skills on restoration to use cultural heritage as a vector of social cohesion between communities.

As the project nears the end of its first year, we’ve made important progress.

· With our local partners, we restored 688 m²of the foundation of the East facade and 118 m² of the drainage of the Northeast tower, preserving the Citadel for the future. Two beautiful but damaged historic buildings in the old city will be stabilized in the coming months.
· We’ve trained 20 vulnerable youth in heritage conservation techniques for 8 months, ensuring a skilled workforce in cultural heritage.
· The project also promoted social cohesion across Tripoli through 26 dialogue sessions and 4 seed grant projects led by youth to use cultural heritage as a means to promote peace in the region.

In Popayán, Colombia, local leaders are working to build lasting peace for their communities through initiatives that emphasize coexistence, resilience, and hope.

Fight for Humanity and our partner Gestos de Paz have been working in the greater Cauca area to help maintain the legacy of the Truth Commission established following the 2016 peace agreement. Our collective efforts include implementation of targeted dialogue sessions, provision of opportunities for collective reflection, and material support for local peace-building initiatives, all aimed at helping to facilitate repair in a region deeply impacted by Colombia’s difficult history.

On Saturday, community members and leaders alike gathered in the community’s shared kitchen space to present their accomplishments. Participants also worked to install billboards calling for peace throughout the area. The message, “Este es un territorio urbano de paz” or “This is an urban territory for peace”, brings hope to a community still reconciling with the consequences of decades of armed conflict.

2024 showed us the dire reality of war — and 2025 is no different. With 130+ conflicts worldwide, compliance with international law is vital, but as the UN Secretary-General noted: compliance alone is not enough. Civilians still face devastating harm and unmet needs.

At , our panel will share research that goes beyond compliance to examine:

⚔️ Hostilities and civilian harm
🏛️ Governance & access to services
🤝 The humanitarian landscape

We’ll ask: What does it really take to protect civilians in today’s wars?

The Rooting for the Future project - implemented with our partners Kofi Annan Foundation, IECD - Lebanon, Permanent Peace Movement (PPM), The Lebanese Ministry Of Culture and with support from ALIPH Foundation - recently held three facilitator trainings at the Citadel of Tripoli.

The historic setting provided the perfect environment to strengthen group cohesion and positive dynamics among the youth participants.

Through interactive methods, including icebreakers and music, the training created strong momentum and engagement. With the guidance of a dedicated consultant trainer, participants expressed great interest in peacebuilding and active involvement in dialogue processes.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and the youth left the session motivated and eager to continue their journey as facilitators of change.

Restoration work started in July at the Citadel of Tripoli as part of the Rooting for the Future project.

The first activity aims at consolidating the North East Wall of the castle: first steps included removing vegetation, installing scaffolding, and securing the site with signage and barriers.

18 young vulnerable participants contributed to this work, attending 8 training sessions where they are learning techniques and safety protocols on a worksite like this one. They also attended two life skills sessions as well as dialogue sessions on social cohesion and cultural heritage.

A win for Syrian cultural heritage! 🇸🇾🏛️
Nearly 1,000 ancient artifacts from Manbij, northern Syria, have been recovered and safely delivered to the Aleppo Museum—a major success for cultural preservation!

These objects, mostly secured from smugglers or handed over by locals, were documented in 2023 as part of our project with Orient association, supported by ALIPH Foundation. Despite difficult conditions, over 1,200 artifacts were assessed and recorded to prevent irreversible loss.

After the 2025 clashes between Kurdish-led forces and Turkish-backed groups, the artifacts’ whereabouts were uncertain. Thankfully, they have now resurfaced—safe and accounted for.

The database of these artefacts and other 7500 artefacts documented will be shared with the Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums during the next Fight for Humanity visit to Damascus .

This rare success story shows how documentation and local collaboration can safeguard heritage, even amid conflict.
Huge thanks to all partners who made this possible under such challenging circumstances!
