Remoteness”, which is the degree to which localities or areas of land are physically or perceptually isolated from the evidence and direct influences of modern technological society, can contribute to the values and viability of a wilderness area. The new IUCN-WCPA Technical Note #10 offers key considerations of remoteness to the design and protection of wilderness areas.

“Best Practice in Delivering the 30x30 Target. Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measure”. This document identifies the most effective options for delivery of a target of achieving 30% of land and ocean in protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures by 2030 (‘30x30’), as set out in the draft Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) from the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

A step-by-step guide is given for those in government and elsewhere charged with implementation. The guide covers a situation analysis, a participatory process to agree on how 30x30 might be implemented, where and how, and legislative, financial, monitoring, and reporting needs (tenure, governance, enabling policies, incentives, management, capacity, financing) for the process.

Neddy Mulimo (Zambia), recipient of the Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award 2022.

Neddy Mulimo has dedicated his life to conservation for 36 years. His passion and drive are the reason he was selected to run an elite and highly targeted Specialist Anti-Poaching Unit in 2008. Day and night, he dedicates his time and energy to unearthing information about illegal poaching activities and guiding the five units he supports to help them meet their fullest potential.

As a mentor and instructor, he is an inspiration to many young rangers with whom he works. He assists all his units with a quiet determination, and actively lobbies on their behalf to improve working conditions. Neddy has been instrumental in forming policies on ranger welfare, ensuring that all rangers in his units have some of the best support in Zambia.

Neddy Mulimo: “First and foremost, I believe I should protect other people and the wildlife around me. I accept the challenges presented to me. I know I should always find an answer to the problem. If these animals are not taken care of and left to these selfish men who shoot them for money, for sure, in generations to come we’ll have no animals.”

Congratulations on behalf of IUCN-WCPA. Neddy, please stay safe, and keep on inspiring rangers all over the world!

Miguel Gonçalves receives the 2022 Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa.

Miguel has worked within the Maputo National Park in Mozambique since 1999, becoming Park Warden in 2008. Under Miguel’s inspirational leadership over the last 12 years, the park has changed dramatically from a free-for-all hunting ground to a landscape able to support thriving populations of wildlife and recovering ecosystems, both in the ocean and on land. His drive and passion, combined with a deep knowledge of his local area, have enabled him to become a leader and advocate for community conservation and education across borders and cultures.

Maputo National Park is a 1.700 km2 protected area that formally merged the spectacular terrestrial and marine ecosystems of Maputo Special Reserve and Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve in December 2021.

Miguel Gonçalves: “I believe in the work that I do passionately. I can see the difference the team has made over the last 12 years and the impact we have had on the surrounding communities, who are our foremost partners in the landscape.”

Congratulations to Miguel, on behalf of IUCN-WCPA. Keep on the amazing work!

WCPA Technical Note #8 Role of Protected Areas in Climate Change Mitigation and Biodiversity Conservation is ready for COP27 and shares three key messages. 1. Widespread consensus has emerged that biodiversity loss and climate change are twin crises that must be addressed together to achieve success in either one. 2. Protected and conserved areas are the most effective tool to address both biodiversity loss and climate change within a timeframe that reflects the required urgency. 3. New protected areas, the expansion of existing protected areas, and support for OECMs can target places where carbon richness and high biodiversity overlap to create “carbon stabilization” areas.
