Since 1967, the Montreux Jazz Festival has transformed a quiet lakeside town into a global stage. 🎶

Held every July between Lake Geneva and the Alps, it brings together more than 200,000 music lovers for over two weeks of pure artistic freedom, where jazz meets every genre and magic often happens off-script.

It began as a 3-day event for a TV competition. Founder Claude Nobs and his team invited Nina Simone, Bill Evans and Charles Lloyd to play and filmed it all.

By the 1970s, the lineup had grown to include legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Santana, Aretha Franklin and Miles Davis. Today, the festival runs for 16 days with many activities beyond the main concerts.

Montreux is known for its improvisational spirit. Sets often run late, morph into all-night jam sessions, or spill out into cafés and the lakeside promenade.

Prince once turned up at the Montreux Jazz Café for an impromptu aftershow. And most of it? Still free of charge.

Above the city, in a chalet in Caux, lies the heart of the festival's memory: decades of live recordings, now listed by UNESCO as part of the Memory of the World.

The archive, digitised with EPFL, includes performances by Nina Simone, Miles Davis, and Etta James. It's one of the richest audiovisual collections in music history.

How Switzerland helps detect storms before they are visible from Earth ⛈️🇨🇭

To better anticipate extreme weather, scientists now monitor the atmosphere continuously from space. Europe’s MTG satellite, developed under the ESA - European Space Agency, provides more frequent and detailed data than previous systems.

At the core of this technology is a Swiss-developed (CSEM) mechanism that ensures exceptional stability of the satellite’s instruments. This precision allows scientists to detect subtle atmospheric changes that would otherwise remain invisible.

The first data is already being used by meteorological services, helping improve early warning systems and allowing authorities more time to prepare for extreme weather events.
