More than 600 years old and still part of village life. 🇨🇭

Mühlebach, in Valais Wallis, is home to what is considered Switzerland’s oldest wooden village centre.

Scientific research has made it possible to date the buildings with remarkable precision. The oldest identified structure is a barn from 1381, while the youngest wooden building belonging to the historic ensemble dates to 1496. Switzerland has individual wooden houses that are even older, but what makes Mühlebach exceptional is the survival of an entire group of late medieval buildings in one village centre.

Their architecture still reveals how people built and lived in the Alpine region centuries ago. Many of the houses have a simple construction, small windows and massive timber structures, while some façades feature a carved cross. Most remarkably, many of these centuries-old houses are still inhabited today.

Their survival is also linked to the history of the village itself. Mühlebach lies along the old road that connected Brig with the Furka Pass and, unlike many Alpine settlements, the village was largely spared major natural disasters that could have destroyed its historic core.

And the story goes beyond architecture. A house built in 1435 is traditionally identified as the birthplace of Matthäus Schiner, who became the first Swiss cardinal and an influential European political figure in the early 16th century.

More than six centuries later, Mühlebach remains not simply a preserved historic site, but a living village.
