Across global markets, commodities are categorized into two primary categories:

🛢️ Hard commodities are natural resources which require mining or extraction - examples include oil, gas, gold, and metals.
🌾 Soft commodities are agricultural products that are grown - think wheat, coffee, sugar, and cotton.

Both are essential to daily life and to global trade. Hard commodities are at the center of industries, technology and more. Soft commodities feed and cloth the world. 🌍

Understanding the difference helps us see how deeply commodities are woven into every aspect of our economy.

At LadIn Commodities, we break down complicity with market insights to make the world of trading approachable - one market insight at a time.📊

What is a Commodity?

A commodity is a basic good like oil, gold, or wheat — that is interchangeable with others of the same kind. It forms the basis of international trade by acting as a crucial input in the production of other goods and services. 🌍

Historically, certain commodities have been seen as hedges against inflation, including:
🔸 Precious metals (gold, silver)
🌾 Agricultural goods (wheat, soybeans, coffee)
🔋 Energy (oil, natural gas)

Why? Because when currency depreciates, assets like oil and gas, agricultural products, and precious metals are viewed as stores of value.

However, their real driver isn’t domestic inflation — it’s the relative strength of the US dollar in global markets.

We can better appreciate how intertwined the global economy is when we comprehend these dynamics.

Gender Equality in Trading: Progress Meets Persistent Barriers

The commodities sector might be advancing towards female leadership representation, however, new data indicates there are persistent systemic barriers present at each level.

🎓 Graduate recruitment conflates two primary issues:
🔺 a perception gap, where the industry is viewed as traditional or not aligning with modern ideals.
🔺 purpose, as young professionals increasingly desire careers based on ethics and sustainability.

The solution? Expand the talent pool.
Recruiting from outside of economics and mathematics increases access to candidates from other academic and professional backgrounds.
Backgrounds that are needed because their soft skills and experience to connect and implement cross-functionally will inspire innovation in trading.

🙎‍♀️ Retention remains a critical issue:
🔺 The motherhood penalty continues to hinder many women's advancement.
🔺 Flexible work policies help, but their success depends on cultural support and leadership commitment.

Changing this landscape takes transformative work.

Although there is some progress with C-Suite representation, trading roles are still 10-12% women and analytics is stalled.

There is also evidence that companies with male cohorts, or allies, in DE&I initiatives are seeing stronger and faster returns on progress.

📊 Women in Trading: How Career Transitions Are Redefining the Industry

In 2024, the industry experienced a change in how women are entering trading roles with individuals coming from technology, legal and financial backgrounds.

Here is what the data shows:
🔹 37.5% of career transitions occurred into trading from analytics
🔹 25% into trading from sales & marketing
🔹 18.75% into trading from origination
🔹 The remainder of the transitions are fairly evenly split across Technology, Operations, Finance and HR roles

This trend highlights a diversification of career paths for women in trading, driven by data expertise, operational experience, and commercial skills. More women are moving from support roles into revenue-generating trading positions—a positive step toward gender balance in the industry.
