Today in Geneva, a new chapter for human rights begins. The Global Alliance for Human Rights was officially launched at Palais Wilson by UN High Commissioner Volker Türk — a bold, cross-sectoral platform bringing together states, cities, civil society, youth, businesses, scientists, artists, philosophers and philanthropists around one shared goal: making human rights real, actionable, and felt by everyone, everywhere.

At the launch, the Permanent Representative of Greece in Geneva, Ambassador Ioannis Ghikas emphasized that Greece fully and enthusiastically supports this initiative, which is exactly what the world needs in these dark times of authoritarianism and war — an initiative that is action-oriented, that mobilizes and empowers people and that ensures no one feels alone in the struggle for a more equitable future for generations to come.

Greece's commitment goes beyond words: Athens is putting itself forward to host the first Philosophers' Dialogue under the Alliance's 21st Century Philosophers' Circle for Human Rights.

Geneva Gender Champions Meeting: Gender Equality in the Digital Age

At today’s bi-annual meeting of the International Gender Champions, hosted by the European Union at the UN – Geneva, alongside the transition of the Global Board leadership from Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General, Martin Chungong to UNECE Executive Secretary, Tatiana Molcean, we engaged in discussions on the network’s priorities for advancing gender equality in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that digital transformation and artificial intelligence contribute to greater inclusion rather than widening existing inequalities.

As Geneva prepares to host major international meetings on AI and digital governance in the months ahead, including the AI for Good Global Summit, promoting women’s leadership and equal participation in the digital sphere remains essential to building technology that serves everyone.

The meeting reaffirmed that gender equality is not only a question of representation, but also of education and fighting stereotypes with the view to shaping the future of innovation, governance and multilateral cooperation.

On the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Security, Kostas Karagounis, met with representatives of employers’ and workers’ organisations who are members of the Greek delegation attending the Conference.

The meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on key issues discussed at the ILO and to highlight the importance of social dialogue in shaping fair and inclusive labour policies.

The gathering reflected the Ministry’s commitment to cooperation with social partners and the value of tripartite dialogue in addressing the challenges of the changing world of work.

Mr Karagounis also thanked the Permanent Mission of Greece in Geneva for its continued support in the Ministry’s work within the ILO framework.

The 114th International Labour Conference of the International Labour Organization is currently taking place in Geneva, bringing together governments, employers and workers’ representatives for ongoing discussions on the future of work.

Earlier today, the Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Security, Kostas Karagounis, addressed the Plenary of the Conference in response to the Director-General’s report on “Harnessing AI for Decent Work”.

He stressed that the central challenge of the digital transformation is not technology itself, but how its benefits are shared fairly across workers, generations, women and men.

He reaffirmed Greece’s support for a human-centered approach to Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the importance of social dialogue, strong institutions and international labour standards in ensuring fair and inclusive labour markets.

He also outlined key priorities on the ILO agenda, including decent work in the platform economy, gender equality, and the protection of labour standards in a rapidly evolving world of work.

Referring to Greece’s experience, he underlined the National Social Agreement as an example of effective social dialogue and consensus-building between social partners.

He further presented labour market developments reflecting this approach:
• unemployment reduced from 18.5% to 9.5%
• female unemployment down 40%
• youth unemployment down 48%

As he stressed, Artificial Intelligence must ultimately be assessed not only by its technological progress, but by its real impact on people and work.

🌊 On , we are reminded that healthy oceans are essential for biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods around the world.

This year’s theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean”, calls on us to rethink how we protect and sustainably manage marine ecosystems.

🇬🇷 Greece is contributing through new marine national parks in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, the expansion of marine protected areas towards the global 30x30 target, and measures to phase out bottom trawling in protected waters.

Protecting the ocean requires long-term commitment, science-based policies and international cooperation.

At today’s commemoration of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, we reflected on the human cost of peace and the courage of those who serve far from home in some of the world’s most challenging environments. 🕊️🇺🇳

We honour the memory of the nearly 4,500 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the service of peace since 1948, including 59 in the past year. Their sacrifice reminds us that peace requires solidarity, fraternity and a shared commitment to multilateral cooperation.

As we remember those who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace, we also express our gratitude to all peacekeepers who continue to work every day to protect civilians, support communities and help build the foundations for lasting peace.
