IEC President Jim Matthews and IEC General Secretary & CEO Philippe Metzger attended the IEC–KATS Stakeholders Dialogue in Seoul this week, where IEC leaders and stakeholders from the Republic of Korea came together to discuss how standards and conformity assessment can keep pace with a rapidly changing technology landscape.

The conversation highlighted the nation's strong technical expertise and leadership across emerging technologies, while exploring shared challenges facing industry, regulators and standards organizations worldwide.

A key focus was the role of AI as an enabler for both standardization and conformity assessment, and the opportunities it creates for more efficient, responsive, and trusted systems.

As technologies continue to evolve, collaboration between the IEC and the Republic of Korea will remain essential to ensuring that international standards and conformity assessment support innovation, trust and global market access.

Thanks to KATS and all participants for a valuable exchange of perspectives and ideas.

At the Standards & Conformance Summit 2026 in Singapore, IEC leadership underscored how international standards are shaping the next frontier of digitalization, sustainability, and global trade.

IEC President Jim Matthews emphasized how standards and conformance frameworks have evolved into strategic economic levers that unlock market access, attract investment, and strengthen participation in global value chains.

IEC Secretary‑General Philippe Metzger also joined industry and government leaders to share how international standards serve as the foundation for regional harmonization while simultaneously enabling access to global markets. They help prevent duplication, incompatible requirements, and market fragmentation, a principle already visible across ASEAN, Association of Southeast Asian Nations Member States.

The discussions reinforced the IEC’s role as a global convener ensuring that trust, security, and interoperability can travel seamlessly across borders. And for an interoperable digital economy, collaboration – across regional, national and international bodies – is essential.

These critical conversations will shape the future direction of development and were held as Singapore celebrates 60 years of standards and 40 years of accreditation — an important milestone that reflect the country's longstanding commitment to quality infrastructure, international cooperation and excellence.

The message was clear: Standards and conformity assessment form the backbone of resilient, connected and future‑ready markets.

Smart cities are constantly finding innovative solutions to become more efficient, connected and secure.
Many of these advances are powered by smart systems that use data, connectivity and automation to improve how cities function and deliver services to their communities.

But how can we ensure these innovations are sustainable? 🤔
We caught up with Ellie Lee, a smart city expert from South Korea, who shares four ways standards are helping cities drive sustainable progress and build a greener future. 👇

Want to learn more?
Ellie will be on the panel of our : Women driving smart systems webinar, organized as part of International Women in Engineering Day. Join her and our other insightful speakers on Tuesday 23 June 2026 from 11:00 to 12:00 UTC

This World Environment Day, we're reminded that climate action is about more than deploying renewable energy - it's also about managing it responsibly.

Wayne Dwallow, Project Engineer at Differ Community Power, explains that as solar systems reach the end of their life cycle, ensuring components are reused, recycled, or disposed of properly is essential to reducing environmental impact and supporting a circular economy.

Through our international standards, and conformity assessment systems, we help promote sustainable practices across the entire life cycle of clean energy technologies.
