On International Day of Indigenous Peoples, we honor the guardians of our planet’s ecosystems, and call for an immediate end to the criminalization of Indigenous human rights defenders.

Two years ago, in 2024, I filmed Indigenous activist Pranab Doley from Kaziranga in Assam, Northeast India, for the Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy Program at the University of Arizona. We spent a few days exchanging ideas, during which his warmth, humor, and sharp intellect left a lasting impression on me. At the time, safety concerns meant I could not film him on the ground in Kaziranga.

Today, Pranab’s message is more urgent than ever: he is currently detained in India.

On July 12, 2026, Pranab was arrested for peacefully protesting a proposed luxury hotel project on ancestral Indigenous land near Kaziranga. In a clear attempt to silence Indigenous leadership, he was slapped with multiple criminal charges. Although a court granted him bail on July 29, state authorities invoked the National Security Act (NSA) just a day later to keep him under preventive detention.
