“Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health”
(WHO - Ottawa Charter 1986)

Health promotion and educati

on is one of the most cost-effective approaches to reducing the huge gap of inequities - a major challenge for global health. The Alliance for Health Promotion, established in 1997 at the 4th WHO Global Conference on Health Promotion in Jakarta, is an international NGO, registered with the State of Geneva. NGOs from different sectors with a strong commitment to health promotion are among its founding members. Through its wide network, the Alliance reaches out to local communities, even those in remote areas, bridging the gap between international declarations on health and the realities of local conditions. The A4HP promotes the empowerment of individuals and communities with the knowledge and the means to better control their health and to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Good health leads to well-being and ultimately the alleviation of poverty and the prevention of diseases. We organize activities at the international, regional and local levels through workshops, training sessions, forums and conferences on priority issues on the Global Health Agenda. The A4HP also participates in project work on health and environment such as the health impact of climate change, strengthening community partnership and the economic empowerment of women. Workshops are integrated into a one-week programme of mobile clinics, run by one of the A4HP members, the Afro-European Medical and Research Network (AEMRN) in Kitale, Kenya. The training aims to empower NGOs, health professionals and the local community to address priority issues of local interest related to health and the social determinants of health. In February 2015, the Alliance organised a Health Promotion Workshop in Bangalore, India. The International Forum on Health Promotion is a major annual event of the A4HP. The fourth edition of the Forum was held 12 November 2014. Its theme addressed issues of health promotion at work and leisure among others.

- In 2016, the 6th global forum on Health Promotion was held in Charlottetown, PEI, Canada with the theme: Health Promotion at the very heart of sustainability. On the A4HP Board the following organisations are represented:

Associated Country Women of the World - ACWW
Global Alliance on Women’s Health - GAWH
International AIDS Society - IAS
International Council on Social Welfare - ICSW
International Pharmaceutical Federation - FIP
International Health Co-operative Organisation - IHCO
International Federation of Medical Students Associations - IFMSA
International Movement for Fraternal Union among Races and
Peoples - UFER
International Pharmaceutical Students Federation - IPSF

📢 Publication Alert!

The Alliance for Health Promotion is pleased to share that our editorial, “Health promotion at the crossroads: putting civil society in the driver’s seat,” has been published in Health Promotion International.

🎉 Marking 40 years since the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, this editorial reflects on how far we’ve come and what still needs to change.

🌍 The editorial reinforces the Alliance’s ongoing work to advance health promotion, strengthen community action, and support more inclusive and participatory health governance.

At a time of growing global challenges, the editorial highlights a critical shift needed in health promotion:

➡️ Moving from policy to practice, by embedding health in everyday life
🤝 Recognizing civil society as a central actor in health governance
💰 Sustainable progress requires addressing funding gaps for community action
🏛️ Current systems remain largely state-centred, limiting community-driven solutions and participation

🎉This year marks 40 years of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, a framework that continues to shape health promotion around the world.

For the Alliance, its message remains central: health is not created by treatment alone, but also through prevention, supportive environments, community action, and personal skills.

That is why our project, Health Education for All, focuses on helping young people build the practical knowledge and skills they need to better understand and protect their health.

Health Education for All is about making health information more understandable, practical, and accessible for children and young people.

Too often, health messages are available but not truly usable.

This project responds to that gap through workshops and clear health education materials that help young people build everyday skills, make informed choices, and better understand their health.

Schools and education settings are powerful places for prevention. When young people gain these skills early, the benefits can last far beyond the classroom.

🤝 In its statement at the WHO Executive Board 158, the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation highlighted its close collaboration with the Alliance for Health Promotion in linking youth and health professionals to build a continuous chain of health promotion from policy to community action, and stressed that a whole of government and whole of society approach must also be a whole of profession approach, fully engaging pharmacists and pharmacy students.

🌍 Through its partnership with A4HP, IPSF called on Member States and the World Health Organization to better recognise and mobilise the pharmacy workforce to advance health and wellbeing for all.

The statement was delivered by Julian Ryan Tan, A4HP Board Member and IPSF Chairperson of External Relations.

📍 In its statement at the WHO Executive Board 158, the Alliance for Health Promotion stressed that, despite the legacy of the Ottawa Charter, health promotion is still largely underfunded and not yet fully embedded across health systems and wider public policies.

The Alliance therefore called on Member States and the World Health Organization to initiate a clear global process towards a health promotion treaty to better translate the right to health into concrete action at the community level and to create more equitable health systems.

The statement was delivered by Thelma Bost, A4HP delegate at EB158 and Project Coordinator at A4HP.
