IAS – the International AIDS Society – convenes, educates and advocates for a world in which HIV no longer presents a threat to public health and individual well-being. After the emergence of HIV and AIDS, concerned scientists created the IAS to bring together experts from across the world and disciplines to promote a concerted HIV response. Today, the IAS and its members unite scientists, policy

makers and activists to galvanize the scientific response, build global solidarity and enhance human dignity for all those living with and affected by HIV. The IAS also hosts the world’s most prestigious HIV conferences: the International AIDS Conference, the IAS Conference on HIV Science and the HIV Research for Prevention Conference.

🇿🇦 South Africa’s rollout of lenacapavir starts today.

The twice-yearly long-acting injectable for HIV prevention will be introduced at 360 government facilities nationwide, expanding prevention choice and marking an important step forward for the country’s HIV response.

As one of the first countries to make lenacapavir available through public health services, South Africa is helping translate scientific progress into real-world impact for people and communities most affected by HIV.

It is often said that health is wealth and South Africa’s launch of the game changing Lenacapavir injectable today, Friday, 5 June 2026, provides a shot in the arm that will boost South Africa’s fight against HIV and AIDS.

🙋🏿‍♀️ What does it really mean to put people living with HIV at the centre of care?

It means dismantling the myths that make healthcare systems less equitable and less effective.

At the IAS Person-Centred Care Advocacy Academy in Paris, advocates tackled five common misconceptions about person-centred care (PCC):

❌ Some communities are "too hard to reach"

❌ PCC just means being nice to patients

❌ PCC provides no value to research

❌ PCC is a passing trend

❌ PCC is only about giving

The reality? PCC is an evidence-informed approach that recognizes the whole person and values people living with HIV as partners in healthcare and research.

🎥 Watch advocates debunk these myths and share why PCC matters.

The academy was organized by the IAS, AIDS Action Europe, AIDES, Coalition PLUS and European AIDS Clinical Society, with support from Gilead Sciences.
