GAPSBiF seeks to promote food fortification with folic acid fortification to reduce preventable neural tube defects such as Spina Bifida

In 2023, the World Health Assembly passed WHA 76.19, “Accelerating efforts for preventing micronutrient deficiencies and their consequences including spina bifida and other neural tube defects, through safe and effective food fortification.” WHA 78 marks one year before the first implementation report is due.

With the disparity between rates of spina bifida between Hispanic and Non-Hispanic people, it is evident that folic acid fortification in corn masa flour is imperative in preventing spina bifida. Spina Bifida Awareness Month is a great opportunity to advocate for this important cause.
