UNICEF Europe & Central Asia UNICEF works to protect the rights of every child in Europe and Central Asia

We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind – to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. Throughout Europe and Central Asia, we are working with governments, decision makers, partners, civil society and media to ensure that that e

very child in the region, especially the most marginalised, can enjoy a healthy and fulfilling childhood. We advocate for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper care at the youngest age forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future.

Playing is how children discover the world.
Every time a child play, they imagine.
Every time they imagine, they grow.
Because playing is not a luxury.

It is a right recognized by the United Nations in Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Today, Lamine Yamal joins UNICEF as a Global Goodwill Ambassador to help defend these rights and use his voice to remind everyone that every child deserves a childhood where play is possible.

Play for every child.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child has shaped the way children are treated around the world, including in Europe and Central Asia. It recognizes children as human beings and individuals with their own rights and highlights that childhood is separate from adulthood and lasts until 18; it is a special, protected time in which children must be allowed to grow, learn, play, develop, and flourish with dignity. https://unicef.link/4uH2Zzv

Five years ago, Svetlana and her husband Goran were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their twins. Although the pregnancy had progressed normally and the babies were healthy and developing well, she needed an emergency caesarean section at the beginning of the eighth month due to high blood pressure.

“[The twins] were without oxygen for four to five minutes and had a grade one brain haemorrhage, which is treated as a stroke. When they were just one to two months old, they had issues with hypertonia and hypotonia. We immediately turned to a physiotherapist, a specialist in physical medicine,” Svetlana explains.

Svetlana and her family started working with the Family-Centred Early Childhood Intervention programme that provides support to families of children under the age of six who have developmental difficulties. Today, in 80% of districts in Serbia, children with developmental risks and delays achieve better developmental outcomes thanks to programmes like these. https://unicef.link/42Q1CCv
