The International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) presents its
compliments and has the honor to draw the attention of representatives of Members and
Observers to the 2026 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII): Powering Entrepreneurs
at the Frontier of Science: Turning Pilots into Pipelines.
The 19th edition of the GII was released on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during an event
attended by heads of government, business leaders, and social entrepreneurs (see agenda
and/or the event recording).
The 2026 edition of the GII ranks the innovation performance of 139 economies, highlighting
the most innovative economies in the world in 2026, and presents the world’s top 100
innovation clusters. Additionally, this year’s GII explores how to support entrepreneurs at the
frontier of science by turning pilots into pipelines, enabling deep science start-ups and
university spin-offs to scale across sectors such as quantum technology, synthetic biology
and advanced materials.
The GII press release summarizes the report’s key findings. The full report can be
accessed/downloaded online, along with the GII Innovation Ecosystems and Data Explorer, a
dynamic platform featuring economy briefs, innovation ecosystem data, regional and cluster
profiles, and the world’s top 100 science and technology clusters. New in 2026, the
Dealroom-WIPO Deep Science Startup Explorer provides a first-of-its-kind global mapping of
science-based startups and university spinouts, offering insights into emerging deep-science
innovation ecosystems worldwide.
If you would like to receive a paper copy of the 2026 edition of the GII, please send a request

Since its inception in 2007, the GII has served as an important reference for countries
developing new innovation strategies and improving their innovation metrics. It has also
been recognized by the United Nations General Assembly as a benchmark for measuring
innovation in its Resolutions on Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable
Development.
With this publication, WIPO aims to enhance our understanding of innovation ecosystems
worldwide to facilitate evidence-based policymaking.
