Floods in Mozambique.

Following a request from OCHA Regional Office for Southern and Eastern Africa, we are supporting the response to the ongoing floods in Mozambique by providing satellite-based flood extent analyses.

Since 2 January, UNOSAT has been monitoring the evolving situation using Sentinel-1 satellite imagery, supporting humanitarian actors in understanding the progression of flooding across affected provinces.

Following the activation in , the situation is monitored through the UNOSAT FloodAI Dashboard: https://unosat-rm.cern.ch/FloodAI/apps/MOZ/?activation=AI20251229MOZ

In 2005, UNOSAT received the UN21 Award for Team Productivity recognizing commitment to operational impact, innovation and a people centered approach. Two decades since then operational excellence in satellite analysis in support of the United Nations system and its Member States is still driving us. Over the years, complex satellite data has been transformed into actionable information, supporting humanitarian response, disaster risk reduction, peace operations and post-crisis recovery. Today, this legacy continues through the expertise, dedication, and professionalism of the team, sharing knowledge and delivering trusted and timely geospatial analysis.

When storms struck in August 2025, the UN Country Team faced a critical challenge: how to assess damage when communities were cut off by collapsed roads and unstable terrain?

UNOSAT's satellite analysis provided the answer. Working closely with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office and OCHA, we delivered the first comprehensive damage maps within 48 hours — becoming what the UN RC called "the only comprehensive visual assessment available" during those critical first days.

But our support didn't stop at emergency response. The same geospatial data that guided first responders went on to inform national recovery planning. UNOSAT maps were integrated with census data and national registries, directly feeding into the Government's USD 42.6 million recovery and resilience framework endorsed by the Council of Ministers.

"The figures, imagery, and data from UNOSAT were essential to feed into this major policy response," said Patricia Portela de Souza, UN Resident Coordinator for Cabo Verde.

This case demonstrates how satellite analysis serves the complete disaster management cycle — from rapid emergency mapping through operational coordination to strategic recovery planning.

UNOSAT presented “Using Geospatial Information Technology to Map Displacement Risk” at the Consultative Workshop on the Climate Displacement Project, organized by the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Agriculture and Environment (ISPAE), Hanoi City, Viet Nam, and the School of Public Policy (SPP), Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

During the session, UNOSAT shared the concept of risk assessment and a case study from Thailand, highlighting how geospatial analysis supports understanding displacement risks.

We also joined the World Café discussions, exchanging experiences and ideas to enhance decision support system development for climate resilience.

Last week in Kuala Lumpur, we had a very productive mission hosted by UNICEF Malaysia, bringing together key government stakeholders and academia to explore how Malaysia can better understand and address climate and disaster risks faced by children.

UNICEF and the Government of Malaysia, with technical support from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), will jointly develop a subnational Children’s Climate and Disaster Risk Index (CCDRI) for Malaysia using the UNICEF CCRI-DRM methodology. The aim is to strengthen child-focused climate and disaster risk analysis so that it can better inform evidence-based policies, programming, and cross-sectoral decision-making.

Children are among the most vulnerable to a changing climate, but tools like the CCDRI help make their risk visible and actionable. We left Kuala Lumpur energized by the strong interest and commitment from partners and are excited about the next steps toward a more resilient, child-safe future in Malaysia.

Many thanks to colleagues from UNICEF Malaysia, government counterparts and academic partners for the rich discussions and collaboration.
