• Low Awareness: Many overseas voters do not realize they must re-register on MySPR for every election.
• High Costs: Last-minute international courier fees create a financial barrier for voters.

THE SOLUTIONS
• Extend campaign periods to allow sufficient delivery time.
• Adopt controlled fill-in ballots sent before Nomination Day.
• Require SPR and Wisma Putra to lead ongoing voter outreach overseas.

Many may not even know this, but during the last General Election, Global Bersih was struggling to find runners for overseas postal ballots that were arriving in KK at the very last minute. Without hesitation, Beverly and her daughters stepped in and helped distribute those ballots across six constituencies around Kota Kinabalu.

It may have seemed like a small act of kindness at the time, but it meant so much. Because of Beverly and her daughters, overseas Malaysians who had gone through so much effort to cast their votes had a better chance of having those votes reach where they needed to go.

For that, overseas Malaysian voters — and all of us at Global Bersih are forever grateful.

Rest in peace, Beverly. Your kindness touched people you may never even have known, and your laughter and light will be remembered.

A beautiful soul, indeed.

We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of our dear friend, Beverly Joeman this afternoon.

Beverly was a former Vice-Chairperson (Sabah) of BERSIH and a human rights advocate who dedicated herself to defending the rights and dignity of Indigenous People in Malaysia. Her courage, compassion and commitment to justice have left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her.

Our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
May she rest in peace 💛

Goodwill is not a voting system.

For too long, overseas Malaysians and volunteers around the world have stepped in to bridge the gaps in our postal voting process — collecting ballots, coordinating deliveries and doing everything possible to ensure votes make it back to Malaysia in time.

We do this because we believe every Malaysian should have a meaningful opportunity to exercise their right to vote, wherever they live.

But this responsibility cannot continue to rest on volunteers and civil society.

As Global Bersih President Nirmala Devi Windgaetter told Malaysiakini, our volunteers have jobs, families and lives of their own. Ensuring that a Malaysian citizen’s ballot reaches home safely and on time must ultimately be supported by a reliable, accessible and properly institutionalised system.

Global Bersih is calling for reform and for our institutions — particularly the Election Commission (SPR) and Wisma Putra— to play a stronger role in ensuring overseas Malaysians can vote without having to depend on extraordinary volunteer efforts.

Our volunteers will continue to stand up for Malaysians abroad. But goodwill should support democracy — it should not be the system holding it.
