🌍 At a time of significant shifts in the international landscape, this event provided an opportunity to reflect on the changing nature of diplomacy and emphasise the importance of bringing together diverse stakeholders to address today’s global challenges.

🫱🏻‍🫲🏽 Our President also highlighted the mission of the International Institute of Diplomacy (IID) and its initiatives to strengthen cooperation, foster collaboration, and promote sustainable solutions.

🌍 Women in Diplomacy: Navigating Challenges and Expanding Opportunities

With the support of the Ville de Genève, this roundtable brought together inspiring voices to reflect on the challenges women face in diplomacy and the concrete steps needed to expand opportunities and foster gender equality.

We would first like to express our sincere gratitude to Ms. Christina Kitsos, Mayor of the City of Geneva, for her insightful opening remarks, and to the City’s External Relations and Communication Office teams, for their support in organising this event.

It was an honour to welcome our three distinguished speakers:

🇷🇼 H.E. Ms. Urujeni Bakuramutsa, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva;

🇲🇽 H.E. Ms. Francisca E. Méndez Escobar, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva;

🇯🇲 Ms. Tyesha Turner, J.P., Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva.

A heartfelt thank you to all three for their openness and generosity in sharing their personal experiences, the challenges and discrimination they have faced, and the strategies they have developed to establish themselves in a world of diplomacy that remains predominantly male.

The aim of this roundtable was to explore what concrete tools, initiatives and support mechanisms could be developed in Geneva to address these challenges, promote gender equality and foster a more inclusive diplomatic environment. Because changing the narrative must go hand in hand with practical solutions.

Our sincere thanks also go to Ms. Fleur Heyworth, Head of Gender and Inclusive Security at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and Head of the International Gender Champions Secretariat, for her excellent moderation.

Finally, thank you to everyone who joined us, asked questions and contributed to a lively exchange.

🎓 We were honoured to conclude our module “Diplomatic Negotiations: Navigating Global Challenges and Building Consensus” with an inspiring session led by H.E. Mr. Matthew Wilson, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, WTO and other international organisations in Geneva.

🌍 The session offered a unique opportunity for an open and candid discussion on some of the defining challenges of our time - from climate change and war to migration and inequalities - seen through the perspective of a leader representing a small state in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

It was also a valuable moment to reflect on the values that underpin the work of a diplomat: leadership, dialogue, integrity and the ability to build bridges and consensus in times of uncertainty.

🤝 A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Ambassador Wilson for sharing his experience, insights and perspective with our participants, and for making this final session such a meaningful conclusion to the module.

🌍 Women in Diplomacy: Navigating Challenges and Expanding Opportunities

On 8 October, the International Institute for Diplomacy – Switzerland (IID), with the support of the City of Geneva, will host a roundtable exploring the challenges, opportunities and how to implement concrete solutions.

We are honoured to welcome:

The discussion will be moderated by Ms. Tatiana Molcean, Executive Secretary of UNECE and Chair of the IGC Global Board, who will also offer closing observations.

🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 From theory to practice: during our Case Studies in Diplomatic Negotiations - Simulation, participants had the opportunity to step into a complex negotiation scenario inspired by the case of Libya, involving multiple international actors with different interests, priorities and positions.

Led by Mr. Raoul Delcorde, Ambassador (rtd) of Belgium, Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and of the IID Council, who took on the role of the Secretary-General of the United Nations 🇺🇳, the exercise offered a hands-on opportunity to experience the complexities of diplomacy and international negotiation.

🌍 The International Institute for Diplomacy in partnership with the Chambre de commerce de Genève had the pleasure of organising a timely roundtable exploring the growing intersection between geopolitics, trade and economics.

🔍 The discussion offered valuable insights into how tariffs, sanctions, export restrictions, supply-chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions are increasingly interconnected with international trade.

💡 One key takeaway was clear: navigating today’s international trade environment requires agility and the ability to understand and anticipate geopolitical developments. For businesses, investors, international organisations and other actors engaged in global trade, understanding these interdependencies is becoming increasingly important to adapt to a rapidly evolving international landscape.

🌍 Diplomacy in a Fragmented World: The New Landscape of Non-State Actors

🤝 In today’s increasingly complex conflict environments, diplomacy must go beyond traditional state-to-state relations.

🎓 During our session, we explored how humanitarian diplomacy can engage with non-state armed actors to promote respect for International Humanitarian Law and the protection of civilians. Drawing on Geneva Call's experience, we discussed the importance of neutrality, impartiality, independence and humanity, as well as the need for a clear moral compass when navigating sensitive contexts.

International Geneva plays a unique role in this landscape, bringing together international organisations, NGOs, diplomatic missions and specialised expertise to enable complementary forms of engagement.

Dr. Girma Amente Nono, Permanent Observer of the African Union to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, H.E. Mr. Carlos Sorreta, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva (ASEAN) and Mr. Markus Schlagenhof, Deputy Secretary-General of EFTA, for a stimulating and insightful discussion.
