The Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) is a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) program. This is not an official WMO site.

The World Meteorological Organization's Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) is an international mechanism for supporting all key cryospheric in-situ and remote sensing observations. GCW provides authoritative, clear, and useable data, information, and analyses on the past, current and future state of the cryosphere. GCW includes observation, monitoring, assessment, product development, prediction, and research. It provides the framework for reliable, comprehensive, sustained observing of the cryosphere through a coordinated and integrated approach on national to global scales to deliver quality-assured global and regional products and services. GCW organizes analyses and assessments of the cryosphere to support science, decision-making and environmental policy.

A few of us had a productive week of fieldwork on the sea ice at Nome, Alaska in late March 2023. Here are a few pictures.

On 29 August 2022, satellite data revealed the opening of the northern route of the Northwest Passage (NWP). The attached figures shows sea ice concentration from a new satellite product that blends data from two satellite instruments. This is a notable occurrence, but not the first time it has been observed during the satellite era. The most recent year in which this route was open by this date was in 2011. Sea ice area in the northern NWP route was well below average but above the 2011 record low. The ice area in the southern route was also below normal. Graphics of sea ice age from Japan's National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) and JAXA are now available on the Cryosphere Now section of the GCW website (https://globalcryospherewatch.org/state_of_cryo/seaice/). The product is available for both the Arctic and Antarctic, with age displayed in years and in days.
