🌍 The Regional Pollution Forum is taking place in 🇰🇪 Nairobi, , bringing together policymakers, experts, and partners to exchange experiences and advance action on pollution and health. Visit 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfwKksmC for more information.

🤝 The forum builds on lessons learned from the Environmental Pollution Programme in Africa, led by GAHP in close collaboration with other delivery and local partners.

💬 It provides a platform to demonstrate how evidence-based data and research can inform policy and drive effective solutions, while enabling countries across the region to share experiences, learn from one another, adapt successful approaches to their own contexts, and explore opportunities for regional action.

Viet Nam is one of the world’s leading exporters of coffee, tea, and pepper. But as production grows, so does reliance on chemical pesticides—raising concerns for both the environment and community health.

Through the Environmental Pollution Programme in Viet Nam, GAHP, in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance, is working with farmers in Dak Lak to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM). By providing training and practical, locally adapted solutions, the project supports more sustainable farming across key crops.

Four years in, the impact on the ground is clear. And the change goes well beyond pest control:

🎓 11,738 farmers equipped with IPM skills through hands-on field schools

♻️ Around 6,000 tonnes of compost produced—saving farmers an estimated 30 billion VND (~$1.1M)

📲 A free IPM app developed to support planning, track costs, and provide real-time weather insights

🌳 186,128 trees planted across farming landscapes

▶️ Watch the video to see how farmers are putting IPM into practice and the impact at community level.

Findings from the Environmental Pollution Programme (EPP) in Vietnam indicate that 17% of 306 adult tea farmers in Tuyen Quang province reported experiencing pesticide poisoning.

Funded by UK International Development through Defra, the EPP (2022–2026) has seen GAHP and the Rainforest Alliance support farmers across Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Son La, and Lam D**g in transitioning to Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Over four years, the programme has reached more than 11,000 farmers 👨‍🌾 across coffee ☕, tea 🍃, and pepper 🌶️ value chains.

The numbers tell a compelling story:

📉 Insecticide use has dropped by up to 82% on demo farms across the programme areas.

👩‍🌾32 women-led farmer clubs are now driving peer learning and knowledge-sharing at community level, with women making up nearly half of all programme participants.

And that's just part of it. 👇

Since 2022, the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP), through the Environmental Pollution Programme in Viet Nam, has been working with the Viet Nam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) to tackle open rice straw burning in the Mekong Delta—one of the region’s main sources of air pollution.

The initiative works with local experts and academic institutions to test practical alternatives:

🌾 Turning rice straw into fuel pellets

🍄‍🟫Producing compost. Using it as a substrate for mushroom cultivation.

These solutions are piloted directly with farming communities.

Early results are promising: emissions are reduced, farmers gain additional income, and agricultural waste is turned into valuable products.

Every harvest season, rice straw burning blankets fields and cities across Viet Nam in smoke — affecting air quality, human health, and the climate 🌫️

On 4 March 2026, more than 120 scientists, policymakers, and international experts gathered in Ho Chi Minh City to mark the conclusion of a four-year research project tackling this very issue — bringing together over 150 experts across 25 institutions to share what was learned 🔬

Four years of work. Here are some concrete findings:
🌾 Field pilots tested across 50 hectares — with early signs of improved soil quality and reduced emissions
📊 Viet Nam's first scientific database linking open burning and pesticide use to air quality, health, and biodiversity impacts
☀️ Solar-powered air quality monitors deployed in real farming communities — tracking pollution before, during, and after burning seasons

As Viet Nam urbanises and grows, cities are facing rising waste challenges. In Da Nang, around 2,000 tons of solid waste are generated daily. Through the Environmental Pollution Programme in Viet Nam (EPP-VN), GAHP, in partnership with Center for Education and Development (CED), is supporting more effective and sustainable waste management in the city.

The approach brings together local authorities, businesses, schools, and communities through:
🗺️ Mapping open waste burning sites and assessing current practices
📈Supporting enterprises to adopt circular business models
🎓Delivering STEAM-based education for schools
🗑️Engaging teachers, students, and Environmental Leaders in waste sorting and plastic reduction initiatives

On 6 March, government officials, businesses, and development partners gathered in Da Nang for the International Conference on Integrated and Sustainable Waste Management—the closing milestone of the Environmental Pollution Programme in Viet Nam 🇻🇳

Co-organised with the support of GAHP and UK International Development through Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the event brought together voices from policy, industry, and civil society to discuss circular economy solutions for one of Vietnam's most pressing challenges ♻️

But the real story is what happened before the conference. Over the course of the programme, waste sorting and awareness efforts quietly took root across Da Nang:
🏫 5 schools, 159 teachers, and 4,000+ students reached — and that's just the beginning
🤝 117 enterprises engaged, with 9 signing MOUs and 5 already putting circular economy models into action
🌿 From classrooms to boardrooms, Da Nang is stepping up for sustainable waste management.
