Welcome to the official page of Soroptimist International of Europe. Seeking ‘the best for women’
Educating women and girls to become leaders, empowering them to achieve their fullest potential, enabling them to use their skills to secure a better life for themselves and their communities – this and more is what defines Soroptimist International (SI) and its some 70,000 members around the world. F

ounded in Oakland, California in 1921, this service organisation of women in business and professions now boasts around 3,000 clubs in 125 countries and territories. The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister and optima meaning best. Over the years and on all five continents, Soroptimists have been striving to achieve "the best for women" in every sphere of their lives. Through its global network of members, international partnerships and work at all the major centres of the United Nations as a non-governmental organisation with general consultative status to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), SI helps to ensure that the voices of women and girls are included in international decision-making and policy setting. ‘Educate to Lead’ is SI’s overarching programme of work and the focus of many projects. Soroptimist International of Europe

Soroptimist International is structured in five Federations – the Americas (www.soroptimist.org), Europe (www.soroptimisteurope.org), Great Britain & Ireland (www.soroptimist-gbi.org), South East Asia Pacific (www.siswp.org) and Africa (https://siafrica.org/UK/home) – each comprised of Unions/Regions and Clubs. French plastic surgeon Dr Suzanne Noël founded the first SI club in Europe in Paris in 1924. Subsequently became the president of the Soroptimist International of Europe (SIE), established in 1930. Today, SIE consists of some 30,900 members in 1,113 clubs in 43 countries. SIE has representatives with participatory status at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, is a member of the European Women’s Lobby in Brussels and is represented at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna and Prague. Helping to transform lives

Also in partnership with other organisations, Soroptimists implement projects at local, national and international levels to educate, empower and enable women and girls to realise their potential in leading and decision-making. These efforts can range from providing basic skills and creating a better understanding of water and food security to funding vocational training or offering microcredits to secure a livelihood. SIE scholarships help women attain higher qualifications in their chosen fields, and allocations from the Action Fund support humanitarian projects and promote educational programmes for women. Disaster Recovery grants offer long-term relief to women and children in extreme need after catastrophes.

“We are still great friends today.”

Michela Fellin was a mentee of Soroptimist International d'Italia back in 2022. Four years on and the impact of working with a mentor is still being felt, and so is Michela’s desire to contribute to the change she wants to see in the world.

Mentoring can create a kind of butterfly effect: the support a mentee receives can remain with her for a lifetime, shaping confidence, choices and how she goes on to support others.

If you are a Soroptimist and would like to become a proud mentor to a future female leader, we have several resources to get you started:

“I seem to be addicted to the position.”

Mara Costantino is a Soroptimist International d'Italia mentor. Like many of us, she wishes she’d experienced the support of having a mentor when she was a young woman.

And not just any mentor, a Soroptimist, dedicated to empowering and supporting other women.

So Mara took on the role she’d wished someone had fulfilled for her. Today she is helping to encourage the next generation of female leaders

🤖 Join us for our next AI Meet-Up!

We’re delighted to welcome Rachel George of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for a conversation about how artificial intelligence is reshaping democracy, trust and civic participation and why the gender trust gap deserves our attention.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in our societies, questions of trust, inclusion and accountability are becoming ever more important.

Together, we’ll explore what this means for democracy and discuss the role that civil society and organisations such as SIE can play in shaping trustworthy AI governance and strengthening democratic resilience.

These female scholarship awardees are part of a leadership a cycle.

Today’s scholarship recipient becomes tomorrow’s mentee, mentor, or Soroptimist leader.

Whether you are already part of this work, or hearing about it for the first time, you are part of the movement behind it.

Scholarships open doors.
Mentoring builds confidence.
Leadership Academies give women the skills and networks to step forward.

In 2026 alone, around 70 Leadership Academy participants moved into dedicated mentoring programmes. Former scholarship recipients also began a mentoring pathway of their own designed specifically for alumnae.

We are not simply supporting women to succeed. We are building women who lead and who bring others with them.

🎓What turns one scholarship into a generation of leaders?

Among the workers most at risk from AI-driven job loss, 86% are women.

Women carry more of the risk in this transition than almost anyone and still have far too little say in how the technology is built. That's precisely why advocacy, education and representation matter now.

Soroptimist International Europe stands with every woman claiming her place in this future, not as a bystander, but as a builder.

What kind of future do you want AI to build?

20/07/2026

Nearly 6 in 10 women now believe AI will boost their careers.

That's a real shift, from caution to confidence. More and more women are seeing AI not as something happening to them, but as a skill they can learn and use. Access to knowledge is the most direct route to change, and it's already underway.

What's one thing you'd want to learn to do with AI?
