Welcome to the official page of Soroptimist International of Europe. Seeking ‘the best for women’
Educating women and girls to become leaders, empowering them to achieve their fullest potential, enabling them to use their skills to secure a better life for themselves and their communities – this and more is what defines Soroptimist International (SI) and its some 70,000 members around the world. F

ounded in Oakland, California in 1921, this service organisation of women in business and professions now boasts around 3,000 clubs in 125 countries and territories. The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister and optima meaning best. Over the years and on all five continents, Soroptimists have been striving to achieve "the best for women" in every sphere of their lives. Through its global network of members, international partnerships and work at all the major centres of the United Nations as a non-governmental organisation with general consultative status to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), SI helps to ensure that the voices of women and girls are included in international decision-making and policy setting. ‘Educate to Lead’ is SI’s overarching programme of work and the focus of many projects. Soroptimist International of Europe

Soroptimist International is structured in five Federations – the Americas (www.soroptimist.org), Europe (www.soroptimisteurope.org), Great Britain & Ireland (www.soroptimist-gbi.org), South East Asia Pacific (www.siswp.org) and Africa (https://siafrica.org/UK/home) – each comprised of Unions/Regions and Clubs. French plastic surgeon Dr Suzanne Noël founded the first SI club in Europe in Paris in 1924. Subsequently became the president of the Soroptimist International of Europe (SIE), established in 1930. Today, SIE consists of some 30,900 members in 1,113 clubs in 43 countries. SIE has representatives with participatory status at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, is a member of the European Women’s Lobby in Brussels and is represented at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna and Prague. Helping to transform lives

Also in partnership with other organisations, Soroptimists implement projects at local, national and international levels to educate, empower and enable women and girls to realise their potential in leading and decision-making. These efforts can range from providing basic skills and creating a better understanding of water and food security to funding vocational training or offering microcredits to secure a livelihood. SIE scholarships help women attain higher qualifications in their chosen fields, and allocations from the Action Fund support humanitarian projects and promote educational programmes for women. Disaster Recovery grants offer long-term relief to women and children in extreme need after catastrophes.

👀 Did you guess correctly?

These three young women are from different Nordic countries and have different backgrounds, ambitions and experiences. But they all have something exciting in common.

From 21–26 June, Iiris Mäkelä, Isabella Maimburg and Sara Berggren will join 17 other talented young women in Aarhus, Denmark, for the SNLA Soroptimist Nordic Leadership Academy — an intensive leadership and personal development programme for women aged 24–30 from across the Nordic region.

The academy brings together future female leaders to develop their skills, build confidence and create lifelong international networks.

➡️ Help us shine a spotlight on these inspiring young women by liking, commenting and sharing this post with your fellow Soroptimists and wider network.

Educate, empower and enable.

🌳💧🌎Over the past four weeks, we have shared the gendered face of the climate crisis. And yet, the rooms where the response is decided to remain overwhelmingly male.

You cannot solve a crisis you do not have to live. Women are not only victims of the climate emergency. They are farmers, scientists, activists, and community leaders driving solutions every day.

Thank you for following this series. Share it, talk about it, bring it into your next conversation.

When floods rise and crops fail, women hold families together. They care for children, for the elderly, for the sick. They are often the last to flee, and when they finally do, they leave with the least.

Less savings. Less land rights. Less access to information. Less protection on the road.

In many parts of the world, women still cannot inherit land in their own name. When the land becomes uninhabitable, they lose not only their home but their entire economic foundation.

Climate displacement is not gender neutral. Neither is climate justice.

🆕 What if the AI tools we use every day were quietly reinforcing gender inequality?

SIE is launching a new AI Meet Up series with a session that tackles exactly that: AI & Gender Equality — Why AI is a women's rights issue.

Our guest speaker, Zinnya del Villar, is Director of Data, Technology and Innovation at Data-Pop Alliance, working at the intersection of data science, AI, gender and public policy. She will explore how gender bias enters AI systems, how it can be identified, and what individuals, organisations and policymakers can do to mitigate it.

Every single day, women and girls around the world spend 250 million hours collecting water for their families. Hours not spent learning. Not earning. Not resting. Not building a future.

And the climate crisis is making it worse: as water sources dry up and distances grow, so do the hours.

This is the second post in our series on Women & Sustainability. The climate doesn't only change the weather. It changes who carries the bucket. 🌍
