At in Brazil, we put Just Transition center stage in our advocacy. Sharing the experiences of grassroots communities on the frontlines of the , we stressed that for any transition to be truly just, it cannot just be a rethinking of old systems – it needs to be a holistic and transformative process. As we lay the groundwork for the next UN Climate Conference at , Franciscans International will keep raising this with decision-makers.

This week we’re at in Bonn, Germany! This June climate meeting is a crucial stepping stone to set the agenda for the Climate Conference in November. Following a long tradition, we will take part in a Talanoa Dialogue to take stock of where we are by asking ourselves three questions:

Where are we?
Where do we want to go?
How do we get there?

No matter where you are, you can join us this afternoon and share your thoughts. Register now at https://actalliance-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/J1IyVDMqRFG7b-2tgQ7S3g #/registration

On this , the message is clear: the climate crisis is no longer a warning about the future – it is a reality of the present. We’ve heard promises, commitments, and concerns. Now we need action.

Acting means protecting communities, defending human rights, and making the urgent changes needed to care for our common home.

For many Franciscans, the core challenge raised at this year’s World Environment Day is one that animates their daily lives. ...

This week, you’ll find as at the intersessional meetings for the on . Bringing together Member States, legal experts, and , these meetings are key opportunities to give feedback on the draft text before the negotiations resume in October.

The third intersessional will look at the Preamble and Article 1 on definitions – key provisions if this treaty really is to . We are concerned about the strong backlash against the inclusion of the right to a , including in the definition of what is considered a human rights abuse. Overall, we see a weakening of environmental protections in the current draft.

FI will continue to push for the inclusion of strong language on the environment and on business activities in the context of conflict.

This week, Franciscans are out in force at the International Migration Review Forum in New York to amplify the voices of migrants and front line communities in global migration discussions. Through advocacy meetings, strategic dialogues between members of the Red Franciscana Para Migrantes, and two side events featuring first-hand testimonies, we’re highlighting urgent human rights concerns and strengthening faith-based advocacy for migrants across the Americas.

In the Americas, there is a large gap between the commitments made to protect people on the move in the Global Compact on Migration and the reality on the ground. Faced with the risks and violence along migration routes, faith-based groups like the Red Franciscana Para Migrantes have stepped up to provide shelter, legal assistance, and humanitarian protection. Their work in defense and care of international law stands in clear contrast with the punitive policies applied to migrants.

During the International Migration Review Forum, we’ll dive into these dynamics during a side-event where speakers will share their first-hand experience of these challenges. Together, they will:

🔎 Analyze the impact of regressive trends in regional migration policies

🙏🏼 Highlight good practices by faith-based communities

💬 Facilitate a dialogue among faith communities, States, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders

Today we’ll be part of a multi-stakeholder side event at the International Migration Review Forum for a conversation on upholding human rights treaties and law.

Reinforcing these principles protects lives, reduced vulnerabilities, promotes dignity, enhances cooperation, and supports both migrants and host communities.

The session will bring together leading voices and representatives of UN agencies, Member States, civil society, migrant and refugee-led organizations and coalitions, academia, faith-based groups, legal actors, and other key activists and partners to:

1️⃣ Explore how rights-driven, inclusive approaches advance the Global Compact on Migration.
2️⃣ Share best practices and data on compliance with international law.
3️⃣ Bridge global commitments with lived realities.
4️⃣ Identify concrete steps and recommendations to strengthen human rights protection and access to justice.

The failure to commit to phasing out fossil fuels was one of the key shortcomings of the Climate Conference. Unsatisfied with this outcome, more than 50 States will meet in Santa Marta over the next day for the first global conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels. Hosted in a region of Colombia known for its immense open-pit coal mines, the venue itself is deeply symbolic of the urgent need to embrace alternative energy sources.

Ahead of the conference, more than thirty Catholic organizations called on governments worldwide to move beyond pledges and deliver real action on climate change. Together, we stressed that any roadmap to do so, must be founded on five principles:

✊🏽 People-centred and inclusive
🤝 Equitable responsibility
🌳 Deep systemic and transformative change
📈 Alignment of economic systems with climate goals
🔎 Transparency and accountability

As global temperatures rise beyond 1.5°C and climate impacts intensify, we face not only an environmental crisis but a profound moral test. We hope that the Santa Marta Conference will serve as a constructive bridge between aspiration and implementation.
