Kahawatu Foundation

Kahawatu Foundation Kahawatu is a Swiss non-profit foundation focusing on improving rural income and livelihoods in developing nations through the power of coffee.

Kahawatu, meaning “the people’s coffee” in Swahili, is a multi-stakeholder, sustainable development initiative. The foundation has been initiated by the Swiss coffee trading company Sucafina SA and can rely on a strong and diversified board: Café Africa International, Ernesto Illy Foundation, Interbank Burundi, Mitsubishi Corporation, Sucafina SA and Sylvain & Co. Its partners are amongst others:

The International Fund for Agricultural Development UN, The Government of Burundi, TechnoServe and Rainforest Alliance. The Kahawatu Foundation is working to make coffee supply chains sustainable, ensuring that farmers obtain the resources they need to improve production, quality and, more importantly, livelihood. Our activities focus on East African nations.
