What's the difference between 'neutrality' and 'impartiality'? 🤔

Our research shows that many humanitarians find it hard to clearly define the difference between these two principles.

Respondents often confused 'neutrality' and 'impartiality,' describing both simply as "not taking sides."

But when interviewees shared real-life examples, the confusion almost vanished.

So while defining the principles was difficult, applying them during negotiations wasn't a problem.

Is this emergency about to shut down your access even further, or has it just created a new reason for actors to talk who wouldn't otherwise engage?

Drawing on practitioner experiences from Ebola outbreaks in the DRC and cholera responses in other conflict settings, our latest blog explores why outbreaks are neither simply "good" nor "bad" for humanitarian access.

How do you approach donors and diplomatic actors to advance your organisation's humanitarian priorities?

At our recent workshop, humanitarian directors and senior leaders from national Yemeni NGOs identified key operational priorities, such as:

- Stronger participation in decision-making
- More equitable partnerships with international organisations
- Transitioning towards resilience and development

But how can organisations ensure these priorities are truly heard by donors?

Over three days, participants put our six-step framework into practice to develop effective diplomacy strategies tailored to their realities.

They discussed how to:
→ Identify the issues that require engaging diplomatic channels (vs field negotiations)
→ Influence key stakeholders to shape policies
→ Frame messages so they will be heard

The workshop fostered open exchange about challenges and encouraged a more strategic approach to humanitarian diplomacy.
