This year’s Global Surgery Day Photography Challenge took us from operating rooms and emergency wards to training centers and referral hospitals across the world.

Different countries. Different realities. One shared commitment: caring for people when they need it most.

Thank you to everyone who opened a window into their world and reminded us why we do this work.

Because sometimes a single photograph can tell the story of an entire health system.

What if being a woman or girl affected whether you received emergency surgical care… and how quickly you received it?

🚑⚖️ Across emergency surgery, trauma, and burns care, women and girls often face delays before treatment even begins.

Financial barriers. Transport challenges. Health literacy gaps. Provider bias. Limited autonomy in seeking care.

The evidence suggests that some of the largest disparities occur long before a patient reaches the operating room.

If systems save lives, then those systems must work equitably for everyone.

Because timely care should not depend on gender.

🌪️🧠 When disasters strike, the damage doesn’t end when the storm passes.

In this edition of our 2026 infographic series, we explore how climate-related disasters are increasing the burden of traumatic brain injury (TBI) while exposing deep inequities in access to neurosurgical, emergency, critical care, and rehabilitation services.

From hurricanes and earthquakes to floods, wildfires, and extreme heat, vulnerable populations face higher risks, greater barriers to care, and worse long-term outcomes. Refugees, displaced communities, children, and people living in resource-constrained settings are often left furthest behind.

But these outcomes are not inevitable.

Building equitable neurotrauma systems means investing in prevention, surveillance, emergency response, neurosurgical capacity, rehabilitation, mental health support, and disaster preparedness—before the next crisis arrives.

Because systems do save lives. 🌍

🧠 The crisis hidden in plain sight.

Traumatic brain injury affects 69 million people every year, yet remains largely absent from global health financing, surveillance and policy discussions.

TBI is not only a neurosurgical issue.
It is a systems issue.
A rehabilitation issue.
A disability issue.
A workforce issue.
A public health issue.

And the burden falls hardest on LMICs.

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the United Nations’ central platform for reviewing progress on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
HLPF 2026 will host high-level representatives from governments, UN agencies, civil society, and academia.

* Support the Head of Delegation in crafting InciSioN’s engagement strategy or action plan (the Head of Delegation could be you!)
* Represent InciSioN at side events, networking opportunities, and strategic discussions
* Lead or contribute to advocacy efforts aligned with InciSioN’s priorities
* Contribute to and help draft the official post-event report

* The applicant must be a member of InciSioN either via the Global IT or via an NWG.
* InciSioN will not cover visa, travel, accommodation, or related expenses.
* ⁠Delegates are expected to self-fund their participation.

No rehabilitation.

Emergency systems decide survival.
And too many patients are still being failed at every step of the journey.
