Maldivian Democracy Network

Maldivian Democracy Network Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) is a human rights organisation committed to protect & promote the principles of democracy & human rights.

MDN was originally formed as the Maldivian Detainee Network in 2004 following mass arrests and allegations of abuse in prisons in August of that year. Although not officially registered in the Maldives until June 2006, MDN is one of the first human rights NGOs established in the country. Working out of Colombo and Male’, MDN created a network of families and friends of people in detention in respo

nse to popular concerns over police impunity and lack of judicial independence in the Maldives. MDN played an important role in campaigning for human rights and democracy in those turbulent times and is recognised both nationally and internationally as one of the main organisational influences that contributed to the democratic reform process in the country. In order to better reflect the much wider range of human rights and democracy related work being carried out by the organization, MDN changed its name to the Maldivian Democracy Network in 2010. However, MDN remains true to its roots with an enduring commitment to detainee rights and periodic prison situation updates as part of our core activities.

📍THAILAND

🚨 On 20 February 2026, the Ratchada Criminal Court sentenced four pro-democracy defenders, Pimsiri 'Mook' Petchnamrob, Arnon Nampa, Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, and Phromsorn "Fah" Weerathamjaree, to two years and eight months in prison under the lèse-majesté (royal defamation) law, in relation to their participation in a peaceful pro-democracy gathering in 2020.

The ruling forms part of a troubling pattern of judicial harassment targeting individuals peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association in Thailand.

In this joint statement, Front Line Defenders and other civil society organisations call on Thai authorities to overturn the sentences and end the criminalisation of pro-democracy defenders.

Legislation and state practices in the continue to impose requirements contradictory to the right to freedom of association. Our review found serious violations of the right through unwritten practices established by the government as well as unconstitutional provisions in the law and newly passed Regulation of Associations.

6 years ago today, the government arbitrarily deregistered and shut down MDN in the Maldives. A month later they seized over USD 50,000 from our bank accounts.

We have not been given a right of reply. There was no due process. No one knows where the money went.

If they can do this to one organisation, they can do that to anyone. Please support us to find justice and accountability.
