📢 Happening Today!

On behalf of the Global Coalition on Deinstitutionalization (GC-DI), TCI is pleased to invite you to an upcoming webinar on:

“How to use International Complaints to Challenge Institutionalization under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)”

Institutionalization continues to impact the lives, autonomy, legal capacity, and community inclusion of persons with disabilities across the world. This webinar will explore how international complaints mechanisms under the CRPD can be used as tools for advocacy, accountability, and systemic change toward deinstitutionalization and community living.

The session will bring together disability rights advocates, OPDs, legal experts, and civil society representatives to discuss practical pathways for engaging with these mechanisms and strengthening rights-based advocacy efforts at national, regional, and global levels.

We are honoured to organize this discussion together with partners from the Global Coalition on Deinstitutionalization (GC-DI), including the International Disability Alliance (IDA), Inclusion International, ENIL, Disability Rights International, Centre for Human Rights, and Validity Foundation.

TCI is present at Women Deliver 2026 in Naarm (Melbourne) this week through two posters co-developed with CBM Australia. These posters aim to bring the voices and perspectives of women with psychosocial disabilities into a major global space on gender equality and inclusion.

They will be on display at CBM Australia's booth and they highlight topics and positionality crucial to us. One poster, co-authored with CBM Australia and Pacific Disability Forum, addresses disability rights within the care agenda. The other, developed jointly by TCI and CBM Australia, focuses on the barriers faced by women with psychosocial disabilities.

Women with psychosocial disabilities are too often left out of the spaces where decisions about our lives are made. Our experiences are shaped not only by disability but also by the intersection of gender, class, geography, and other identities and social locations. Through this contribution, we are trying to ensure these realities are visible and not overlooked.

We will continue to find ways to bring our voices into every space that matters, and we are grateful to CBM Australia for this collaborative opportunity.

22/04/2026

It's 20 years to the CRPD, but still today, young persons, women, and gender diverse persons with psychosocial disabilities experience distinct, yet deeply interconnected forms of discrimination, coercion, violence, and exclusion in different settings. The psychiatric, legal, and social control systems continue to dominate the lives of persons with psychosocial disabilities, shaping whose voices are heard, whose leadership is recognized, and who is permitted to participate in decision-making processes.

To strengthen our advocacy and to center the voices of youth, women, and gender diverse communities of persons with psychosocial disabilities in the global deinstitutionalization agenda, TCI Global, with the support of Disability Rights Fund, organized two online consultation meetings for its members and their networks in the Asia Pacific, Africa, Americas, and Europe regions.

It was a moment of excitement and solidarity for the movement to come and be together across different time zones, contributing to the discourse in various languages, supporting each other in the discussion, and collectively designing our 'Call to Action'. The CTA will serve as a guiding tool for our members to lead national-level advocacy and is also intended to be used at regional and global platforms. It will be launched towards the end of May, and we aim to disseminate it widely among stakeholders.

Attending long online meetings takes effort and dedication, and our members sat with us throughout the duration of these consultations. For that, we at TCI share our heartfelt appreciation and deep gratitude to each member. We also thank our members for doing the strong grassroots work in communities, for sharing their experiences and lessons, and for contributing to these consultations. We highly value these spaces where we come together for a peer learning exchange and have the opportunity to learn and reflect for our collective advocacy.

Look for more updates as we continue to take this forward.

A recent UN Inquiry has uncovered shocking and systemic abuses against children and adults with disabilities in Mexico, including in psychiatric facilities, orphanages, and group homes. These findings, reinforced by DRI’s decades of research, highlight how institutional systems continue to harm rather than support, and underline the urgent need for deinstitutionalization and community-based alternatives.

Join DRI, with support from the Global Coalition on Deinstitutionalization (GCDI), for a webinar on:
