In early May, we joined the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation in celebrating press freedom and editorial cartooning, and in awarding the 2026 Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Award. The laureates are Safaa Odah from Palestine and Jimmy “Spire” Ssentongo from Uganda, for whom we were honoured to portray in two short films. The ceremony took place at the Geneva Graduate Institute featuring a keynote speech by Joseph Stiglitz and the presence of Kenneth Roth.

Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist and Pentecostal pastor who founded Panzi Hospital. There, he has treated thousands of women and girls subjected to brutal sexual violence during and after the Second Congo War—often performing up to ten surgeries a day during 17-hour shifts.

For decades, he has stood on the frontlines against the use of r**e as a weapon of war. In 2018, his unwavering commitment was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize Nobel Prize, honoring his efforts to end sexual violence in armed conflict. Denis Mukwege is among the most recognised laureates with 15 awards to his name.

Dr. Mukwege’s work reminds us that defending human rights sometimes begins with healing the deepest wounds.

When she was just 12 years old, Rugiatu Turay endured the pain of female ge***al mutilation (FGM). Years later, after fleeing Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war and living in a refugee camp in Guinea, she witnessed the practice continuing—even in the harshest conditions.
That was the turning point.
In 2000, while still displaced, she founded the Amazonian Initiative Movement -AIM to protect girls from FGM. After returning home, she expanded the movement to her hometown of Lunsar, working directly with communities—women, girls, chiefs, imams, and even traditional cutters—to end FGM and create alternative livelihoods.
Her courage transformed personal trauma into national advocacy.
