🏅2026 IPA Prix Voltaire Shortlist - Sam Yan Press (Thailand)

This independent, student-run publishing house was founded in 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand, by Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal and other students at Chulalongkorn University. Sam Yan Press publishes diverse views, considering itself as infrastructure that enables others to participate in public intellectual life and spreading works of global dissidents in Thai.

✍️ For 20 years, the IPA Prix Voltaire has recognised bravery in publishing and the defence of free expression worldwide.
2026 marks the 20th anniversary of this prestigious prize, which celebrates publishers who take personal risks to ensure authors’ voices are heard - even under pressure, threats, or persecution.

📍 The 2026 Prix Voltaire ceremony will take place at the 35th International Publishers Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 5-9 July 2026.

Making space for young voices in global publishing 📚

At World Expression Forum, publishers, young advocates, and trade representatives came together for Workshop 3: "The future of publishing: Making space for young voices." Under the theme Freedom to Disagree, this intergenerational session tackled a major challenge: how to empower young authors and publishers in an era of shrinking free expression.

The session focused on expanding the Young Voices Network (YVN) -an initiative of PEN International and the Frankfurt Book Fair, which the International Publishers Association (IPA) has joined.

The IPA contributed to the session's delivery, with James Taylor serving as Master of Ceremonies and Gvantsa Jobava presenting on stage alongside partners from the Frankfurt Book Fair and PEN International.

Through collaborative table discussions, participants tackled the urgent structural needs and funding gaps for emerging authors, the pressures young publishing professionals face against a backdrop of shrinking free expression, and how international book fairs can unlock new opportunities for youth.

Every participant concluded the session by identifying a personal commitment to help the Network grow. The future of books depends on the doors we open today.

✍️ For 20 years, the IPA Prix Voltaire has recognised bravery in publishing and the defence of free expression worldwide.

Freedom to publish is one of the founding principles of the IPA.
Its protection and promotion is one of IPA's key objectives. In many countries, publishers who provide authors with the means to disseminate their written ideas run the same risks as the writers themselves. Their work requires immense courage and a values-based, altruistic commitment.
