ITC SheTrades Her Success. Our Future. | ITC's initiative to advance women's economic empowerment through trade.

Only 1 out of 5 exporting companies is led or managed by women. Today, women are still significantly less likely to engage in and benefit from international trade. The International Trade Centre (ITC) launched the SheTrades Initiative to remove barriers to women's participation in trade by working with governments, the private sector, and entrepreneurs to build the business capacities of women and to create a fairer, more sustainable global economy.

30 Rwandan women-led businesses are meeting 14 buyers from Europe, the Middle East and the United Kingdom in Kigali this week. 🇷🇼

The Rwanda Trade Mission, from 10 to 12 June, brings together exporters of fresh horticulture and processed agrifood, from chillies, avocados and French beans to dried chillies, cashew nuts and chia seeds, with buyers looking to source from Rwanda.

The three days move from the negotiating table to the field. These include:
🤝 One-to-one meetings with buyers
🏭 Visits to the businesses’ farms and processing facilities
✈️A tour of RwandAir's cargo facilities

This initiative is co-implemented by TradeMark Africa and International Trade Centre in partnership with the Mastercard Foundationation. It is delivered in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the National Agricultural Export Development Board.

Nuraizah Shamsul Baharin, AWEN Focal Point for Malaysia, relies on AWEN's connections across to grow her own business. The network she is part of is also the network she leans on.

Back home, she plans to bring more Malaysian women entrepreneurs into AWEN's activities so they can access the same cross-border connections she has.

In Vientiane, AWEN leaders worked to make that possible for every member state: clearer governance structures, shared commitments and more consistent leadership so that the network functions as a useful resource for women entrepreneurs across ASEAN.

To sell food across an African border, you need certifications, compliance documents, and technical approvals. For women running small agrifood businesses, meeting those requirements is harder and costlier than for most.

This joint FAO-ITC policy brief examines how technical barriers to trade affect women producers and traders under the AfCFTA, and what policymakers need to do about it.

Connecting women producers to international markets is central to closing the gender gap in agrifood systems, and a key call of the UN's International Year of the Woman Farmer in 2026.

Women carry out 61% of informal cross-border food trade along the Abidjan-Lagos corridor, yet inadequate infrastructure, harassment, and opaque customs procedures fall harder on them than on men.

This joint FAO-ITC policy brief sets out what needs to change under the AfCFTA.

Connecting women producers to international markets is central to closing the gender gap in agrifood systems, and a key call of the UN's International Year of the Woman Farmer in 2026.

“E-commerce must be treated as a strategic channel, not a supplementary one.”

Tran Thi Phuong Anh started Luxali in Hanoi to showcase Vietnamese wooden furniture to the world. Through training and mentoring, Luxali rebuilt their online storefront on Alibaba and drew 328,000+ product searches from buyers across the US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Australia and the UK.

Now she is setting her sights on the EU.
