“Mines take lives. Mines do not save them.”

The whole room needed to hear this message from Mirsad Tokić, a landmine survivor and former deminer from Croatia. Words he delivered as he opened this week’s Mine Ban Treaty intersessional meetings in Geneva.

Last year, five EU states walked away from this treaty, two of whom are now planning to produce millions of new landmines.

Meanwhile, Croatia completed its clearance and Lebanon, while being in the middle of an armed conflict, chose to join anyway convinced that standing behind the ban is what will ensure the safety of its citizens.

The UN Secretary-General just called withdrawals from the Mine Ban Treaty a "dangerous retreat from international humanitarian law" — and he's right. Civilians are still the ones paying the price for landmines and cluster munitions in nearly 20 countries worldwide.

We're thankful for the Permanent Mission of Norway to the UN as it picks up exactly that thread with a dedicated session to reaffirm commitment to the Mine Ban Treaty.

Thank you Camille Pagella for sitting with ICBL-CMC Director Tamar Gabelnick to produce this piece.

It's always a pleasure to work with engaged journalists willing to shine a light on the humanitarian impact of antipersonnel mines and the challenges facing the Treaty.

A timely read for anyone following the state of international humanitarian law today. The article is available in French.

Landmines do not disappear when wars end. They remain in the ground, killing and maiming civilians long after—children walking to school, families travelling by car, or farmers using tractors.

Poland and Finland are now preparing to produce AP mines, and politicians in other European states are suggesting they leave the Mine Ban Treaty.

The ban is still strong but needs active support. The EU should uphold the ban and refuse to fund AP mine production.
