The Dutch Heraldry Society is pleased to announce that the 24th International Heraldry Colloquium will take place in Wageningen from 17 to 21 August 2027. The colloquium is being organised under the central theme “Liberty”, a subject closely connected to Wageningen’s historical significance as the Dutch “city of liberation”.

Members of the AIH, heraldists, historians, art historians, and anyone interested in heraldic culture and its broader historical context are warmly invited to participate in this international event. The colloquium aims to provide a forum for academic exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, and the presentation of new research in heraldry.

Further information concerning the programme, registration, lectures, excursions, and practical arrangements will be published progressively on the official website. Please consult the website regularly for updates and announcements.

Het NGH heeft speciaal voor het ‘Liberty Colloquium 2027’ een Facebookpagina geopend.
Liberty - International Heraldry Colloquium Wageningen August 17-21 2027 > https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61590534051385

It is with enormous sadness that we hear of the death of one of the giants of Scottish Heraldry, Mark Dennis, formerly Ross Herald Extraordinary. Even more extraordinary is the legacy of love and artistry Mark leaves behind him. Among the many memorials to his exceptional skills and talent is the Elizabeth Sword, which he designed and which was presented to His Majesty The King at the Honours of Scotland Ceremony which followed the Coronation.

Here is Mark (left) with HM The King and the Lord Lyon examining the Sword at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Mark's family.

May his sweet and generous soul rest in peace.

The XXIIIrd International Colloquium of Heraldry
(Iaşi, August 27-30, 2025)

www.iasi-aih-2025.net

Almost two decades have passed since Iași proudly hosted the Vth International Colloquium of Genealogy (9–13 May 2007). Soon, the historic capital of Moldavia will once again welcome an academic gathering of comparable significance: the XXIIIrd International Colloquium of Heraldry (27–30 August 2025).
As in 2007, responsibility for organising this distinguished event rests with an enthusiastic team from the “Sever Zotta” Romanian Institute of Genealogy and Heraldry – founded in 1998 and still the country’s foremost advocate for the twin disciplines of genealogy and heraldry.
Held under the auspices of the International Academy of Heraldry (established in 1949, and the leading authority in the field worldwide), the colloquium is organised in close collaboration with Iași’s foremost academic and cultural institutions: “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, the “Moldova” National Museum Complex, the “Queen Marie” Municipal Museum, and the National Museum of Romanian Literature. Support has also come from prestigious scholarly associations, including the Balkan History Association, and from the National Commission of Heraldry, Genealogy, and Sigillography of the Romanian Academy – Iași Branch.
The event enjoys the high honour of royal patronage: at the gracious invitation of H. M. Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, the colloquium is held under the auspices of the Royal Family of Romania. A specially appointed representative will attend the opening ceremony. Likewise, His Eminence Teofan, Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina, has bestowed his blessing on the undertaking, approving a partnership with the “Sever Zotta” Institute to ensure its smooth organisation. The municipal authorities of Iași have once again responded with strong and tangible support for the historical research championed by the Institute.
The programme includes over forty scholarly papers covering themes as diverse as state, territorial, municipal and family heraldry; heraldic usage and tradition; and heraldic art. Specialists from almost twenty-five countries – from the Old World to the New – will gather in Iași: professors, researchers, archivists, collectors, some holding official appointments in their homelands, others working independently, but all united by their love of the past and respect for symbols. Further details of the colloquium theme and programme may be found at: https://www.iasi-aih-2025.net/programme. The meeting will also host the International Academy of Heraldry’s annual session, bringing many of its members to Iași.
To mark this unprecedented heraldic event in Romania – and to foster regional collaboration – the organisers, with the support of the University Museum of Iași, the Iași Branch of the National Archives of Romania and the Transylvanian Heraldry and Vexillology Association, have prepared a two-part exhibition. The first section presents archival documents embellished with heraldic devices; the second pays tribute to Keöpeczi Sebestyén József (1878–1964), designer of Greater Romania’s coat of arms. This commemoration is especially fitting in a year that marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of King Ferdinand I and the 150th anniversary of Queen Marie, the royal couple who, in the aftermath of the First World War, personally oversaw the creation of the arms of a united Romania. In addition to this special exhibition, participants will have the opportunity to visit the city’s foremost museums, including the Palace of Culture, the “Queen Marie” Municipal Museum and the Monastery of the Three Hierarchs Museum.
To encourage modern heraldic artistry, the organisers have also invited two young talents – Arch Bettina-Evelin Basarabă-Varga (Timișoara) and Mr Ștefan Amatiesei (Cluj-Napoca) – both certified heraldic artists under Government Decision No. 25/2003, to display their recent work.
For four days, Iași will become a true international capital of heraldry. The “Sever Zotta” Institute expresses its heartfelt thanks to the citizens of Iași for their keen interest and unfailing support, and hopes that this event will stand as an exemplar of how academic gatherings may be conducted with dignity and vision.
Finally, this press release would not be complete without a moment of remembrance for our dear colleague Dr Sorin Iftimi (1965–2021) – a passionate explorer of Iași’s storied past and an outstanding scholar of heraldry and heraldic art, to which he made an enduring contribution. Taken from us far too soon, he would have rejoiced to see this international colloquium brought to life in his beloved city. To his memory – our eternal tribute.
