In M’Bera camp - Mauritania, women are turning skill into strength. After months of training in nutrition, hygiene, and community entrepreneurship, the cooks of School 3 have launched their own income generating initiative: “Les Délices de Mbera.”

Their new venture supports economic independence while offering healthy, natural snacks that keep children safely on school grounds and promote balanced nutrition.

With partners, parents, teachers, and students cheering them on, these women are showing what empowerment looks like — confidence rising, opportunities opening, and a community nourished by their leadership.

In the heart of M’Bera camp in Mauritania, hands are learning to transform the land.

RET, through the Model School Project with World Food Programme, brought together 145 farmers for hands on training in sustainable agriculture — from composting to natural biopesticides. Led by 14 trained facilitators, the sessions helped participants turn local resources into real solutions: healthier soils, lower production costs, and crops protected without chemicals.

One farmer shared how he once spent 750 MRU on fertilizers — now, he can produce his own and safeguard his harvest.

Skills growing. Resilience rising. A community moving toward true self reliance.

“We learned the language of our land.”

In Fougagaou, Maradi, farming once felt like guesswork for 28‑year‑old Bassirou Hassan. Long days in the fields brought little reward, and harvests rarely matched the effort poured into the soil.

Everything shifted when he joined the Farmer Field School programme implemented by RET Germany in partnership with ASB. Through hands‑on learning, Bassirou and his peers discovered how to truly understand their land — which millet and cowpea varieties thrive, which seeds to choose, and the right moment to plant.

They replaced the old mata seeds, unknowingly unsuited to their soil, with improved varieties like chikti and HKP. The change was immediate: greener fields, stronger crops, and a renewed sense of pride across the village.

Today, Bassirou sees farming differently — not as a gamble, but as knowledge, skill, and confidence rooted in the earth.

“Now our fields thrive, and so does our hope for the future.”

In M’Bera camp, improving school nutrition is a direct investment in children’s learning and wellbeing. Through the Model School Project, RET and World Food Programme trained 127 cooks, storekeepers, and parents in nutrition, hygiene, and canteen management, strengthening the foundations of safer, healthier school meals.

The training culminated in an inter school culinary competition showcasing nutritious dishes prepared with both school supplies and local products. While School 3 earned first place, all participating schools advanced their skills and commitment. The result: better meals, stronger learning environments, and a community working collectively for its children.

“Working on these lands taught us to believe in ourselves.”

In Dan Issa, the CIGABA project is helping families rebuild their livelihoods with dignity and hope. For Karima Abdou, a 40‑year‑old widow, the Cash‑for‑Work opportunity arrived at a moment when holding her household together felt heavier than ever. She enrolled her son, 25‑year‑old Moudaha, hoping it would open a door for their future.

On the worksite, Moudaha found purpose.

He learned discipline, teamwork, and the quiet strength that comes from shaping your own path. He realised their future didn’t have to be elsewhere — it could grow right here, from their own hands.

The income he earned helped Karima stabilise her home and start a small business selling condiments and food items. A modest beginning that now sustains the entire family.

“With this opportunity, we realised our future can be built here — with our hands, our determination, and the chance to support our family with dignity.”

A land restored. A family steadied. A future reclaimed.

✨ “A person who produces feels strong.” Maha’s words carry the weight of a lifetime — and the light of a new beginning.

At 58, she stepped into the Leap Natural workshops in Mardin and found more than a livelihood. She found purpose, sisterhood, and the quiet freedom of waking up each morning knowing she belongs somewhere.

From soap‑making to woodblock‑printed textiles, Maha now creates alongside women who laugh, heal, and grow together — proving that solidarity can rebuild what displacement once fractured.
Her journey is a reminder that when women produce together, they rise together.
