The Federation Humana People to People

The Federation Humana People to People We are united in our purpose: to address urgent social, economic, environmental & humanitarian challenges worldwide.

Much of the funding for activities in the Global South comes from our Global North members & associates through joint fundraising efforts. Humana People to People spans the globe through 30 independent national member associations, who are all members of The Federation Humana People to People. Our organisation is officially registered in Switzerland and has its operational headquarters located in

Zimbabwe. We grew out of a progressive education movement in the 1970s, rooted in the struggle against apartheid and colonialism. We are committed to tackling some of the world’s major humanitarian, social and environmental challenges. The Federation Humana People to People supports its members in delivering critical on-the-ground programs across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. In 2025, working in 46 countries across five continents, members of the Federation Humana People to People have implemented 1,856 development projects in the areas of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment, Community Development, Health, Humanitarian and Education, reaching over 17.1 million people in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. Globally, we had over 20,000 employees by the end of December 2025. Our international development work is characterized by the same agenda: protecting the planet, building communities, and supporting people by connecting them with others, unleashing their potential for positive change and action. At our heart is a set of principles on how to create development and to raise funds for it. The countless partners, national and international, who have supported – and continue to support – our work over the years, share this ethos. Our activities are aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda. Working side by side with people in their communities and our numerous partners, we support countries as they strive to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, creating lasting positive change in the process.

In 2025, five exceptional rural educators from Kenya, Liberia, Mauritius, South Africa, and Tunisia received Special Recognition through the inaugural Rural Excellence Spotlight, sponsored by Humana People to People – Educational and Training Foundation (HPP-ET).

Building on this momentum, Rural Excellence will be introduced as a dedicated category within the AU Continental Teacher Awards for an initial period of three years.

By institutionalising rural teacher recognition at the continental level, the African Union and HPP-ET send a clear message: rural educators are not exceptional despite their context — they are essential because of it.

Excellence in teaching is defined by impact, not infrastructure.

The Rural Excellence category aligns with the AU's Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 26–35) and reinforces the commitment to making teaching an attractive and respected profession across the continent, particularly where it is needed most.

When rural teachers are recognised at the highest level, the message reaches ministries, communities, and young people considering the profession: rural teaching matters, rural teachers lead.

Nominations for the 2026 AU Continental Teacher Awards will open soon.

Our members work in close partnership with ministries of health, local authorities and partners to support public health systems, some of them being multi-sectoral health programmes that integrate health, education, agriculture and climate resilience. By strengthening local health governance and connecting people to quality health services, Humana People to People stands with communities to end epidemics as public health threats by 2030 and to make health for all a reality.

Education That Works— 36,000 graduates and counting

Since 1981, more than 36,000 young people have graduated from Humana People to People's vocational training centres across rural Sub-Saharan Africa. They didn't only sit in classrooms. They worked alongside electricians, farmers, builders, and tailors — gaining the experience that turns training into a livelihood.

Celina Sanha is one of them. After her electrical internship in Guinea-Bissau, she said:
"My goal is to establish an electricity team in my community. I want to inspire other girls to believe in themselves."

This is what changes when training reflects real life.

Vocational education is more than training, it is a pathway to livelihoods, dignity, and sustainable development.

Humana People to People’s TVET programmes are preparing young people for the jobs of the future by integrating green skills across their training. From renewable energy to climate-resilient agriculture, youth are learning how to protect their environment while building sustainable livelihoods.

This is not only about addressing climate change, it is about strengthening local economies where young people can thrive.

From vulnerability to entrepreneurship — Fedson's story
When Fedson Selwin arrived at DAPP Mikolongwe in Malawi, he was looking for a way out of a precarious life. He left with a trade, a business plan, and the confidence to use both.

Today he runs his own enterprise — one of thousands of stories that show what skills training can do when it connects to real opportunity.

This is what Humana People to People works for across 16 TVET colleges in 8 African countries: training that doesn't end at graduation but launches what comes next.

Africa Day 2026 — Education Fit for the 21st Century

Today the African Union asks a question worth sitting with: what kind of education actually prepares young people for the lives they want to build?

Across the continent, millions are learning. Fewer are finding the bridge between what they learn and the work, income, or businesses they need next. That gap is where the real conversation lives this Africa Day.

At Humana People to People, four decades of working alongside communities has taught us something simple: skills matter when young people can use them. To earn. To start something. To contribute to the economies around them.

Over the coming days, we'll share what that looks like in practice — from solar installations in Guinea-Bissau to year-long industrial attachments in Zimbabwe.

Happy Africa Day!

We prioritise teacher training to help reduce the shortage of primary school teachers, especially in rural areas, so every child benefits from a qualified, motivated, and multi-skilled teacher. Our programmes are designed to allow everyone to explore the reality of life and apply what they learn to influence that reality.

Within the Farmers’ Clubs programme run by Humana Brazil, farmers help each other in protecting the environment. Local structures, such as producer groups, cooperatives, and community networks, take part in capacity-building training, planning and implementation. They assess, adjust and adopt new methods to strengthen family farming value chains and participate in local climate actions.
