Just a couple of weeks back in Nairobi, we came together with trade ministries, customs, private sector representatives and technical experts from 8 EAC Partner States for two key events advancing regional trade facilitation:

📍 Technical Peer Learning Workshop on Trade Portals
📍 EAC Sub-Committee on Trade Facilitation Meeting

In a joint International Trade Centre, the East African Community and UN Trade and Development partnership, participants advanced efforts to:

✅ Strengthen Trade Portals as key tools for transparency & simplification
✅ Introduce new digital features in Trade Portals, including corridor view, real-time tariff calculators, automated enquiry points and future applications of AI
✅ Enhance coordination and peer learning among trade facilitation partners in the region
✅ Roll out the Integrated Risk Management initiative and curriculum for improved border agency coordination
✅Review and simplify leather trade processes across Partner States

By driving digitalization, transparency, and simplification of trade procedures, the EAC is leading the way toward a more integrated and competitive trade environment for East African .

This workshop was made possible through the joint efforts of ITC under the II programme, the UN Trade and Development and the East African Community Secretariat, with financial support from the European Union EU International Partnerships, the African Development Bank Group and the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance.

🚀 A powerful new digital platform is transforming how Jordan manages trade and logistics performance — accelerating trade and turning complexity into speed, transparency and real-time control.

Jordan has taken a major step forward with the launch of the Trade and Logistics Performance Gateway, inaugurated in Amman by H.E. Eng. Sami Smeirat, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship وزارة الاقتصاد الرقمي والريادة_ الأردن, with more than 250 stakeholders in attendance. A second launch in Aqaba brought together over 130 partners, reflecting strong national momentum.

During the events, Jordan Customs honoured our team with an award – a meaningful acknowledgment of our shared commitment in advancing trade facilitation reforms in Jordan.

📊 A smarter way to manage trade
A true game changer, the Gateway connects data from 40+ public and private entities and transforms 1B+ records into 1,500+ real-time KPIs across 450 interactive dashboards, helping authorities and business to:

✅Detect earlier delays and anomalies across sea, air, and land
✅Accelerate evidence-based reform implementation
✅Improve predictability and transparency for traders and logistics operators
✅Strengthen Jordan’s competitiveness as a regional trade hub

🤝 Partnership in action

We’re thrilled to have launched the electronic Queue Management System at the Dostuk border crossing between the Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan! 🚚🚧

Before the system, trucks waited on average up to 7 days on the road leading to Uzbekistan, resulting in high costs, significant risks for drivers and goods, especially perishables ones, and serious inconvenience for local residents.

This new system launched will:

✅ Reduce waiting times for drivers and passengers
✅ Increase transparency and predictability
✅ Improve supply chains planning and efficiency

With the eQMS, border crossings are now scheduled within a 30-minute time slot. Given the scale of traffic – over 87,000 vehicles in 2024 – this represents a concrete step toward improving efficiency, predictability, and regional trade flows.

Developed under the -funded Ready4Trade Central Asia project, the eQMS is a testimony to the strong collaboration between the Kyrgyz Republic’ State Customs Service Государственная таможенная служба при Министерстве финансов КР, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the State Enterprise Customs Infrastructure and the International Trade Centre.

It was great for our team to be at the 2025 – a chance to attend inspiring sessions and reconnect with friends and partners from across the trade community.

One of the highlights was the launch of the World Trade Report 2025 on “Making trade and AI work together to the benefit of all” – showing just how transformative AI can be a game-changer for trade facilitation:

🚢 Faster trade: AI is already streamlining supply chains, automating customs and improving visibility.
📋 More inclusive trade: Nearly 90% of firms using AI report real gains in trade-related activities.
🌐 Closing infrastructure gaps: AI-powered digital tools are helping developing countries leap ahead.

The opportunity is enormous: AI could lift global trade by 34–37% by 2040 and for developing countries, GDP could rise by 15% with digital trade facilitation – almost double the gains without digital catch-up.

At International Trade Centre, we’re already bringing AI into our trade facilitation programmes –helping developing countries modernize infrastructure, digitize customs and build the digital foundations for 21st-century trade.

Our goal is simple: turn AI from a digital divide into a digital bridge – connecting developing countries to global markets through smarter, faster and more inclusive trade systems.

It’s time to invest in digital infrastructure, build capacity and work together – so that AI-powered trade facilitation benefits everyone, not just the most advanced.

This summer in Tanzania, we kicked off the implementation of CART.IS, ITC’s new methodology to help governments map, coordinate, and upgrade the digital systems behind trade procedures.

We started with a hands-on training with Mamlaka ya Maendeleo ya Biashara Tanzania on data exchange for priority exports like coffee, avocado, spices, and leather – supporting integration with the Government Enterprise Service Bus , a priority reaffirmed by the Prime Minister.

💡Why CART.IS? Governments often face siloed IT systems, fragmented coordination, and inconsistent data. CART.IS addresses these challenges by assessing digital readiness, mapping interagency flows, and recommending reforms for paperless trade.

In Tanzania, this will allow us to:

✅ Map data flows
✅ Audit existing ICT platforms
✅ Identify bottlenecks and gaps in data sharing
✅ Support integration with national and regional digital systems
✅ Recommend concrete reforms for full electronic exchange

Last week in Dodoma, the team engaged with COPRA, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, and the e-Government Authority to advance this initiative. More to come soon!

Support to simplification and digitalization of trade procedures is part of the EU-funded II programme and reflects ITC’s commitment to practical, systems-based trade facilitation that delivers real benefits for businesses and institutions alike.

How can the China–Lao–Thailand railway support not just trade in goods, but also help local businesses grow? 🚆

That’s the question we tackled with partners in Vientiane, in an event we hosted with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, in collaboration with the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

With support from the – 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda Sub-Fund, the event brought together public and private stakeholders to address the barriers facing Lao — from complex export requirements and costly compliance to digital skills gaps, weak first- and last-mile logistics, and outdated customs procedures.

The discussions focused on how to unlock the railway’s full potential for local producers by making trade faster, fairer, and more inclusive. Key priorities that emerged include investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, expanding digital tools, strengthening trade finance, and advancing coordinated policy reforms.

These insights were later shared in a dedicated meeting with the Director-General of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of and the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Lao PDR, on the sidelines of the conference held in Awaza, Turkmenistan last month.

A big thank you to all our partners for co-creating solutions and helping transform a transit corridor into a driver of sustainable and inclusive growth in Lao PDR!
