Chewore South – with its riverine forests, open savannahs, and wild river corridors – is one of Africa's last truly intact wilderness landscapes in Zimbabwe's Zambezi Valley.

Awe for Nature Foundation and our implementing partner, the Chewore Conservation Trust, in partnership with Zimparks are managing 200,000 hectares of this wilderness. Not a small thing. Not a short-term commitment.

On World Environment Day, this is the work we show up for. 🌍

Collaborating for Conservation in the Greater Mana Pools Ecosystem

From 15 to 25 May, field teams from Chewore Conservation Trust – our implementing partner – and the Great Plains Foundation conducted joint wildlife monitoring surveys across the Sapi and Chewore Safari Areas.

Covering established transects in early-winter conditions, teams recorded carnivore tracks and s**t and carried out direct game counts, helping to build a better understanding of wildlife populations and movements across the Greater Mana Pools Ecosystem.

Conservation at this scale depends on partnership, coordination, and a great deal of time in the field. Thank you to the field teams who covered it.

In the Zambezi Valley, this year's Africa Day theme is more than a policy statement. It speaks to something communities navigate every day.

In Mbire District's Masoka community, collecting water once meant walking several kilometers through areas shared with elephants and crocodiles. Through community-led efforts and in partnership with our implementation partner, the Chewore Conservation Trust, clean water is now available much closer to home.

When communities have reliable water access, the pressure on natural water sources eases, and encounters between people and wildlife become less frequent.

Water security and conservation are often discussed separately. In the Zambezi Valley, they are the same conversation.

Today, Awe for Nature Foundation joins the world in commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity, observed under this year's theme, 'Acting Locally for Global Impact.'

The United Nations emphasises that reversing biodiversity loss depends on the strength of local action, with communities, organisations, and governments working together.

We could not agree more.

In Zimbabwe's Chewore South Safari Area (CSSA), Awe for Nature Foundation works in partnership with Zimparks to protect Chewore South – part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our work actively advances the 30x30 goal under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, supporting Zimbabwe's commitment to protect 30% of its land by 2030.

This is one piece of a much larger story, and our 2025 Annual Impact Report sets out the full picture.

In April 2026, a quiet but significant milestone was reached in Masoka, a community in Zimbabwe's Zambezi Valley.

Our on-the-ground implementation partner, the Chewore Conservation Trust, completed Phase 2 of the Masoka solar-powered piped water scheme, installing three additional 5,000-litre tanks to bring total water storage capacity to 20,000 litres – directly benefiting 1,500 people across five villages: Tizirai, Fakero, Chenjerai, Dumba, and Mubairakuenda.

In a community where women and children once walked more than 5 km to fetch water – often through areas shared with crocodiles and elephants – clean water is now available within 1 km of home.

As Prof. Patience Gandiwa, Zimparks Director of International Conservation Affairs, noted during a recent site visit, Zimbabwe has lost nearly 390 lives to human–wildlife conflict in the past five years, with crocodiles consistently accounting for the highest number of fatalities.

The Masoka water intervention, led by the community, is a critical step toward reducing human–wildlife conflict in the Zambezi Valley.

Phase 1 was completed in December 2025. Phase 2 followed in April 2026. Two phases down – and the scale of what remains to be done only strengthens our resolve to keep going.

Our 2025 Annual Impact Report is here – and it tells the story of a year that exceeded our own expectations.

From counting 1,624 elephants from the air over Chewore South, to installing a solar-powered water scheme that has changed daily life for 1,500 people in Masoka, to launching pioneering biodiversity credit pilots – this has been a year of deep roots and bold ambitions.

None of it would have been possible without the trust and partnership of Zimparks, whose collaboration with our implementing partner, the Chewore Conservation Trust, remains central to everything we do in Chewore South.

Behind every number in this report is a community, a staff member, or a family whose life looks different because of the work happening in Chewore South.

Shaping Zimbabwe's Biodiversity Credits Framework – from the Zambezi Valley to the national stage.

This week, our team from Awe for Nature Foundation (Awe Nature), represented by Gregor Pipan, James Egremont-Lee and Aaron Murphy, alongside our implementation partners from the Chewore Conservation Trust (CCT), represented by Dr Paradzayi Tagwireyi, are attending the Developing Zimbabwe's Framework for Biodiversity Credits workshop in Kadoma (7–8 May 2026).

During the workshop, our team presented on Biodiversity Finance: Market Design with a Pilot in the Zambezi Valley – drawing directly from our work in Chewore South, where Awe Nature and CCT are actively developing biodiversity finance solutions on the ground.

Discussions are centred on biodiversity credits as a policy tool, international case studies, gender and inclusivity in biodiversity credit design, lessons from Zimbabwe's Carbon Credits Trading Framework, and biodiversity monitoring and data systems – all key for a framework tailored to Zimbabwe's unique context.

For us, this workshop is an opportunity to help shape national policy, align our Chewore South initiatives with emerging national standards, and demonstrate that conservation and sustainable finance can work hand in hand for Zimbabwe's natural heritage.

Behind every conservation milestone and every nature finance solution we are building at Awe for Nature Foundation, these are the people showing up – in the field, in the community, and behind the scenes.

Today, on International Workers' Day, we celebrate the AWEsome team at Awe for Nature Foundation and our implementing partner, the Chewore Conservation Trust.

Thank you for everything you do. Happy Workers' Day. 👏
